It took me two tries to read this. First time around, I DNFd at the halfway point. But I guess my curiosity got the better of me...

Now before I say this, let me say that dark and gritty romance is typically the genre I lean towards. Lately, it seems to be the genre I read the most and I've definitely read my share of them, varying from gray to the flat out DARK. It also means that I tend to be very picky with the dark books because I've read my fair share of them. So what I'm about to say goes against pretty much everything I know and thought and never thought I'd find myself saying it. EVER.

This book was too vulgar for me.

Yeah. I'll give you a moment to process that.

See here's the thing, the story is actually quite unique and was very promising. And if the writing style will work for you? You will love it. Unfortunately, that's precisely what didn't work for me. The writing read like it was trying too hard. What I mean is, I felt like it was attempting to shove down my throat how "dark" this book and the characters are. It was very superflous to the point of redundancy. The hero, X, kept telling the reader over and over and OVER again what a bastard and monster he is. As a matter of fact, the word "monster" appears 34 times throughout the book. Yes, I get it!

"There was no black and white in my world. It was black and blacker.
And I was the blackest of them all."

then a few chapters later...

"I was dark and twisted...unfeeling. My talent was taking life away. I never got off on it, it was nothing more than a job."

and a few chapters later...

"I was good for one thing and one thing only. Killing. A monster couldn't love.

Amity did an amazing job with this new series. It is darker then any of her other books but she knocked it out of the park. It was so brilliantly written that it's so easy to get lost in the pages and not want to put it down. It's not your typical motorcycle gang book. It mostly focuses on X who is the Royal Bloods hit man. They broke and trained him and he is feared. Then we have Mercy who came to a bar for a job, it's owned and run by Royal Blood. She meets X there, where she has an attitude to help keep unwanted advances away. She is just trying to lay low. No one knows her story or asks, just the way she likes. You can feel the connection between X and Mercy, but with his new assignment he should be out looking, but he is more interested in having her once, then moving on. There are a lot of dark and serious themes in this book. If you can handle or like this type of book it is a must read!!! Amity took her writing to a new level and this book needs to be read and given the recognition it deserves!! It kicks ass and #LickAHitman

This book could have been a lot shorter and it would have been better. The end is a cliff hanger. The woman in the is book, mercy, is desperate towards the end. And no one ever said why her family was killed.

5 AMAZING STARS!!!!

If I could rate this book higher than 5 stars it would be 10'star read for me! Amity cross I'm addicted to your books. You always seem to surprise me with your stories. This is a well written book and not your normal everyday love story! This book was totally different from what I was expecting. I don't really read books that have MC's in it but this one had just enough to where it wasn't taking over the story that was being told.

The characters are all bad ass in there own way. Each character plays an important role in this story. Each of them has a reason why they are involved in it.

X is a sexy bad ass hit man. He doesn't bulls**** around he is straight forward and to the point. Bad ass isn't enough to describe this character. Heartless and ruthless I think are better words for him. But God all mighty this man is SEXY! He is HOT!! Amity you are so good at writing hot guys!!

Mercy I liked her. I'm not always a fan of the girl characters but Mercy I liked. But then again I find myself liking the girl characters amity writes about. They aren't the helpless innocent girls. And I love that! Mercy has had a horrible thing happen to her family which turns her into a bad ass bitch. I loved how she had a mouth on her. Even tho she was scared she wouldn't show it! God she was sexy too lol...

Weiss I liked him. We get enough of him to find him interesting. I couldn't figure him out, other than he sounds hot and he is a total bad ass too. Oh yeah and I think I hate him now lol we shall find out more I guess in book 2!

This isn't your typical love story, or your typical broken guy story. This story has murders, guns, MC's and bad ass characters. X and Mercy are joined by darkness. They each have their own darkness to fight.

Their worlds are consumed with darkness – a darkness created by others and forced upon them with no chance of ever getting away without paying in blood. Xavier “X” Blood and Mercy Reid’s only connection is in their need to get themselves out of the cruel realities they find themselves, which is easier said than done when one has been forced to live this life for a number of years, turned into a monster and forced to pay retribution as the Royal Blood’s hitman and the other had to ultimately give up her “perfect” existence and live on the run because her need for revenge has led her down a dangerous path that there’s no turning back from.

If there’s one thing that I’ve garnered from the books that I’ve read by Amity Cross is that she’s not afraid to think outside the box and go darker and nastier than most authors feel comfortable doing, which is one of the reasons her books lure her readers in and have them begging for more when they end in cliffhangers.

X, like other of Cross’ male leads, is more of an anti-hero than a hero. He commits heinous crimes for the Royal Blood motorcycle club, and it’s the darkness and carnage that feeds his black soul. He’s dark and twisted – completely unfeeling, which is how he’s had to be in order to carry out his orders. His humanity has been stripped from him, and that’s fine by him because no one has ever done anything to make him care or make him want to redeem himself in anyone’s eyes until Mercy.

Mercy is nothing like the woman she used to be; her heart is hardened and the only thing she needs is retribution. She doesn’t need X as a complication to her plan, but she can’t deny that she wants him.
