This is a long awaited text to glean my text bookshelves. Considered highly expensive for me at its recommended retail price I was fortunate to obtain copies at a lower price. There are many other books available but to have such a concise collection of pictorial and informational aspects regarding the conifer species to hand in 2 volumes provides the reader or researcher with an invaluable source to hand. The writing is clear and concise with pictorial aid, some of which are full page, with many conifers illustrated more than once to allow for the variations in habit to be clearly represented. These are 2 books which will be taken down on many occasions, for reference, identification and shear pleasure. I would highly recommend it to horticulturists, nurseries, libraries, etc.

Extensive coverage of cultivars

It's a lavishly illustrated book for the (reinforced) coffee table - the two volumes weigh nearly 9 kg. There is extensive illustrated coverage of named cultivars and the diversity of these is amazing. What is generally missing though, are photographs of 'normal' trees such as you would expect to find growing in the wild. For some of the more obscure species there are no images at all. So it is not a book you can easily use for identification of wild trees.

I am very disappointed. While these books are beautiful and excellent references, they are very expensive. The box arrived bashed in and shabbily repaired with packing tape. The books themselves were inside a thin plastic bag akin to those use for garbage or recycling but there was absolutely no padding inside the box to protect the books. I need these for a university course I am taking.
