I thought it would just be bland and buggy, but it left a horrible, chemical-like aftertaste. A bit worried I might have poisoned myself. Inedible, even to me. Returned it.
Original Review:
Considered giving 2 stars, because I did not return this and will eat it, despite problems, but, realistically, most people reading this review wouldn't put up with this, nor should they have to. (At the time of purchase, price was less than plain white rice per pound and I bought it with rewards points, so it was free to me... and I am dealing with food insecurity.)
Addressing the common complaints:
1. Packaging: As many have experienced, the inner plastic bag was torn open. Upon inspection, I believe, in this case, it was done accidentally in handling (the tear was along the top seam, as if it had been picked up roughly.) Almost no rice had spilled out, but it easily could have.
2. Insects: I let the bag sit for a couple of weeks and no moths or live insects appeared, as has happened to others. However! I had to wash the rice thoroughly before cooking, because there are a few dead insects in it. Gross, right? Oh, well, a girl needs to eat.
3. Authenticity: Unlike others, who received parboiled rice or plain white rice, mine was real basmati. However! It was very stale. There was no real aroma. I suspect that Royal sold off a lot of old/damaged merchandise and a third party is selling this "aftermarket" rice.
Conclusion: If you are on a very tight budget and can get this for free, and if you don't mind bugs and staleness, roll the dice, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone I know and won't take my chances on it again.
Basmati rice is not "sticky" like Jasmine and many other varieties, particularly short-grain rices. There are several traditional ways to cook this rice. Some involve soaking and washing. But the easy (and perfectly fine) way to cook it is to just add 2 cups rice to 4 cups water. Add some salt if desired. Bring gently to a boil uncovered, then cover the pot, and immediately turn down the heat to low, and simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes; give it a stir a couple times to keep it from sticking to the pan bottom. Just do a taste test to see when it is done to y our taste. It comes out delicious every time, and it is hard to mess up, even if you cook a little too long on low heat. This is so easy to cook that I have never understood the need for a rice cooker!
If you do want the rice a little bit "stickier" -- as you might when served with Chinese dishes -- substitute a small amount of short-grain rice, such as Botan. I use one and three-quarter cups Basmati with one-quarter cup Botan (and add four cups water) when cooking rice to accompany Chinese dishes that are eaten with chopsticks. ( Eating pure Basmati rice with chopsticks is difficult!)

A tip for long term storage: Put some dry red chillies (available online or any Indian store or even regular grocery stores at times) in the bag of rice and just use rubber bands or clips to tie it up and put inside the bag. Insects will never affect the rice. This is an age old technique that works wonders. I guarantee you.
