I devoured this story in one sitting. It's seamlessly written, effortless to read, and completely engaging. I laughed - a lot - at the Prince's inner monologue as well as the snappy banter between all of the principal characters. Even better, Emma made me love every one of them - well, almost every one of them, anyway. They felt like family and friends from beginning to end: relatable, unpredictable, and memorable - especially Nicholas's brother, Prince Henry, whose story we will get to enjoy as the series continues.
Emma knows what readers want - and what we need - in a great story. Enough reality to resonate; enough fantasy to inspire; and just enough heat to keep you captivated from beginning to end. And while this is, indeed, a contemporary fairy tale, like other stories of its kind, it will also make you think about the choices that come with family, responsibility, honor, duty, destiny and a once-in-a-lifetime love affair. You will feel every emotion: the surprise, the happiness, the passion, the hopelessness, and the growing sense of desperation as Nicholas and Olivia navigate the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that threaten to tear them apart. You may cry at their darkest moments - I certainly did - but you'll want to stand up and cheer at the end. If you're like me, you'll want to start back at the beginning and read it "for the first time" all over again - and you won't want to wait for the next standalone in this promising series.
I've been an ardent fan of Emma Chase since she released her timeless, bestselling Tangled series, and my respect for her has grown with every new release. Enthusiastic Emma fans will be surprised and delighted when a character from her unforgettable Legal Briefs series makes a cameo appearance in Royally Screwed - so be on the lookout. If you're just discovering Emma Chase, be prepared: you'll want to go back and read everything she's written, if only to tide yourself over until Prince Henry's story hits the bookshelves.
Oh well, please, allow me some moments to indulge in His Royal Hotness, as I still have a royal hangover from Emma Chase's enigmatic prince. And do forgive me for acting like a fool in this review, as I believe this one deserve to be tackled at length.
At first glance, at first meet, at first impression, Prince Nicholas Pembrook came off as an annoying, obnoxious, irritating prince with unsavory character. I thought he was going to be that typical bad boy royal who thought so highly of himself, but halfway through the book, my thoughts about him turned upside down. A royal with a heart, a prince with sense of humor, a brother torn between duties and family and love.
Olivia Hammond had it hard and difficult. Her life seemed to be at shambles ever since her mother died and her father broke down from heartache. Her little firecracker of a sister Ellie was the one thing that got her up and running in their quiant coffeeshop, Amelia's, even when it was on the verge of foreclosure. (I thoroughly love Ellie, by the way!)
And then she met this prince who thought so highly of himself, offered her a thousand euros for a kiss. If you were in Olivia's shoes, would you decline the offer, or go kiss and tell?
I can't believe this is just the first time I read a book by Emma Chase. Why, why, why? What have I been reading my entire life?
One moment I was okay, the next minute I was tearing up inside. I don't know how to handle these princes of Wessco. At first I thought I'd see Nicholas and Henry as the laidback versions of Prince William and Prince Harry of Wales. Mostly of their family tragedy and military involvement and party-party inclinations. But the moment Nicholas brought Olivia to Wessco and introduced her to the palace, I stopped comparing the royals and saw Nick at a whole new light. He's amazing. He's fantastic. He's everything I've ever dreamed of. And he's everything I'd never get. (Lucky bloke!)
And Prince Henry... my goodness! I was so wrong about him at the beginning. I thought he was immature and insensitive. But when he poured out his heart, I cried along with him. I can't wait to read what happens to him after Nicholas dropped the bomb at his feet. O.M.G.
And Olivia, you feisty American gal, how could you be so much lucky. I'd love to trade places with you one day, have a taste of living in the palace and being with His Royal Hotness himself 24/7. How would you like that?
Emma Chase, I am so sorry I haven't read your past books. I am so sorry I had put off reading Royally Screwed two months ago when I got it on my Kindle. I am so sorry for the stars in my eyes whenever I see Nicholas on that book cover. I am so sorry for acting like a silly little girl right now. I bet Queen Lenora won't approve of my behavior. But I am not sorry for falling in love with your story and for falling hard for Nicholas. And I am sure, I won't be sorry meeting Prince Henry real soon.
Thank you Emma for this has been a royal rollercoaster ride and I love riding every minute of it.
I loved both Nicholas and Olivia and thought they made a great couple. Olivia has never had anything handed to her and has worked very hard for what little she has. She’s trying to keep her mother’s bakery from closing while making sure her little sister has the means to go to college. Nicholas may have had everything handed to him his whole life, but he’s surprisingly humble (at times) and understands the huge responsibility he will be handed one day. He is surrounded by so many fake people with ulterior motives that he needs someone real and honest in his life, and they don’t get more real and honest than Olivia.
Not only did I like Nichols and Olivia, but I liked all of the secondary characters as well. Nicholas had a fiesty but loving relationship with his grandmother, a.k.a. the Queen. His best friend⎯Simon⎯was cute and charming, and Simon’s wife⎯Franny⎯was the champion in Olivia’s corner that she desperately needed. His younger brother⎯Henry⎯had his ups and downs, but I was definitely a fan by the end of the book. Olivia’s best friend⎯Marty⎯was a little out there, but he was good for a laugh. Her little sister⎯Ellie⎯was sweet and bubbly, but she was not afraid to go toe-to-toe with someone when the situation called for it.
ROYALLY SCREWED is told in dual POVs and comes with a beautiful HEA for Nicholas and Olivia; it really was a fairytale read. Henry gets the next book and I am looking forward to reading it.
