Product Description

Royalty is the word forming card game where players not only make words, but attempt to steal words already formed by their opponents. Play with seven cards in your hand. Make words/melds of 3 or more cards and record the score for that word by adding the point value. Knave cards act as wild cards and can be used for any letter. Capturing is done by adding at least one additional letter and changing the meaning of an opponent's word. Royalty has lots of exciting ways to score extra points, including melds or capture of words all of one color and using all seven cards in your hands. Recommended for ages 8 to adult, 2 to 6 players (although most often played by adults.) Takes the best elements of rummy and scrabble and combines for an exciting, thought-provoking word game. Includes rules of Solitaire Game called Monarchy

It's much better designed than other card games like Scrabble Slam. I've enjoyed this game for years and was glad to get it again after my copy was borrowed not returned.

I bought this game and the cards were sealed, still are, but I will almost certainly NEVER play it. I thought this would be a good game for someone who uses a walker, and has a small "tabletop" on which we could play. I wish I hadn't bought this turkey.
----------------------------------------------

The rules are written too ambiguously. Several questions come to mind while I read the rules.
First: A player can "capture" (or "crown") another player's word.
Can someone modify another's word, and the next player modify that word further? Or when the first player modifies someone else's word is that word "retired" from play.
This is not made clear from the rules.(See update: but I'm gonna say only one modification on another's cards are allowed. This seems most logical, but the card company couldn't make this clear)
------------------------------
Also, if I "capture" someone else's word, do I get the face value of the cards, ie, do I get the added value of all the cards the original "melder" (or creator of the word) used, plus the value of the cards I added or not? Does the original melder still get points for the original word they created? This isn't at all clear from the rules.(See update: I'm going with what the instructions say, one point per captured card, but it should have been mentioned EXPLICITLY that previous bonuses from a run of colors don't apply to the "capturer")
--------------------
AND--if the "melder", or creator of the original word got, say, double score for that word, maybe because they used all the same color cards, do I also get that bonus when I modify the word? I think not, but there are too many questions about how this game is played. I will not be able to pull this put at Christmas and get others to play.
