Fantastic vignettes in the world of "The Hole Behind Midnight."

This book is a fabulous little foray into the world of the 25th hour, the setting of Boomer's marvelous debut novel "The Hole Behind Midnight." Some parts, like "On AWAK and the Long Hour Holds," and "On Spirit Creatures," could be inserted seamlessly into the novel itself. They can certainly stand alone as essays on their respective topics (where "essay" and "pissed off occultist midget comedy hour" are loosely interchangeable). Other parts, like the first and third vignettes, are short stories, and I suspect that they are more satisfying when read in conjunction with the character development and background provided in THBM; I personally loved them, and if their job is to whet the appetite for more 25th Hour goodness, they certainly succeed. The fifth and final section, also a short story, makes me yearn for more novel-length 25th Hour insanity, and I have specific hopes that in that story Royden and Cleon are seeing the Formless Magistrate about killing [REDACTED spoilers for The Hole Behind Midnight]. So, if you enjoyed The Hole Behind Midnight, pick up this little treat while you wait for the sequel (and I do mean "little"...it is, unfortunately, only 36 pages of text...wonderful, wonderful text that goes by all to quickly...that's really the only bad thing about it). If you haven't read The Hole Behind Midnight, I would personally suggest that you start there, but Royden Poole's Field Guide can certainly serve as an introduction to the world as well.

The Good: Clinton J. Boomer is an excessively skilled author and Royden Poole's Field Guide to the 25th Hour is written in the uniquely bizarre expletive-laden style his fans know and love.

The Bad: The paperback is only 52 pages long, so be aware so unless you're a die-hard fan you might want to get the Kindle version instead.

The Ugly: If you haven't read the novel "The Hole Behind Midnight" most of this material won't make much sense. Moreover, at a mere 53 pages, this collection of short stories will leave you wanting more.

Summary: Recommended reading for fans of "The Hole Behind Midnight." Wish it was longer!
