We learn that it's not uncommon for a child to have oversized feet, to leave a ring around the bathtub, to have a less than perfect nose, and to keep a stash of bizarre treasures in his/her room. It's not unusual to misunderstand adult instructions or wonder why things happen as they do. That's life, and it's OK. In fact, it's more than OK--it's well worth a chuckle.
Both droll and respectful, author Leslie C. Halpern gives us down-to-earth snapshots of a child's world. At the back of the book, she offers several questions regarding self-image and vocabulary to help children get the most from the poems.
The sometimes comical, brightly-colored pictures that accompany each poem take us further into the celebration and consternation of growing up.
Geared for ages 5-8 but a fun read for anyone.
Oral Nussbaum's illustrations are the proverbial icing on the cake: charming, funny, whimsical.
Halpern and Nussbaum make a great team -- and the children are the beneficiaries.
We bought multiple copies for the kids on our Christmas gift list.
It also provided a perfect opportunity to discuss some of the "social" situations that they might encounter.
Thanks so much Oral & Leslie! Great job : )
