Many decades ago now, after I leased my very first apartment, I had to buy various items for my kitchen which included storage bowls, etc. I literally had nothing starting out. I was on a very strict budget. I shopped around and ultimately I purchased Rubbermaid items. They were not cheap, albeit not excessively expensive either, but I felt they were well made and if well cared for would last me a long time. Believe it or not, I am still using some Rubbermaid storage bowls and canisters that I purchased well over 50 years ago. I always washed by hand and never used them in the microwave, and they rewarded me for their good care. After all of these years, the plastic has lost its lustre, but they still do their jobs with no problems. This is the best endorsement I could give to products like these.
Now, in the present day, I found the Brilliance collection. I wanted the 19.9 cup size for 5 lbs of all purpose flower, but it seems that size is no longer made, so I ordered the 16 cup size instead. As expected, since this is Rubbermaid, these canisters are very well made. Whilst my old canisters were not completely air tight, I think these are, or at least they are very, very nearly air tight. I managed to fit all but 1.5 cups of flour into the 16 cup size, so I am happy enough. I would still buy a 19.9 cup size if they were still available, though.
If you have a history with Rubbermaid and know their products are well made, you can trust that their products are still well made. The plastic is well moulded and sturdy, and the lid fits very well. If you do not have a history with Rubbermaid products, I can assure you that you will not be sorry if you purchase this line of canisters. Furthermore, I can assure you that they are a very good investment. If you do not abuse them, if you do not put them in the microwave or the dishwasher but wash them by hand, you can count on them to last well over 20 years. As I said at the start, I have some Rubbermaid bowls and canisters I have been using for well over 50 years.
Anytime I think of quality kitchen products, I think of a few names including Rubbermaid, Le Creuset, and some of Oxo (Oxo's product range is not totally reliable---some items such as their tongs, are excellent whilst others not so much). I think Rubbermaid will always be in the top three makers for the rest of my lifetime. If you buy quality, it pays off.

I love these 16 cup containers! They’re a sturdy crystal clear plastic, hold 5 lbs of flour and are air tight. As a matter of fact when I opened them for the very first time I could hear the air pressure release.I’m recovering from a broken arm & saw in a video how to open & close with one hand ~ simply put the lid on and press it down in the middle then put your hand across the top and push down both tabs at the same time and it’s easily sealed tightly.As you can see in the photo, I dumped the entire 5 lbs of flour into the first one I bought. When I got the second one, I just slid the unopened bag inside. Much easier, so that’s the way to go. Plus I can see exactly what kind of flour it is.On the down side, they’re very expensive and according to reviews, the price has gone up 40% from last year. That’s why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
