I had gotten back on Amazon a few days ago to purchase some more of the red-topped pantry containers. After looking through the reviews again, I had seen a lot of issues with missing lids and the suggestion that maybe Rubbermaid was phasing out the red-topped style. I brought myself on over to the Rubbermaid website, and sure enough, I could not find the red-topped Modular containers anywhere on their site. I really wasn't too excited to buy the newer model. We had the old clear Rubbermaid containers about 10 years ago when it came out that the clear ones were Polycarbonate (BPA). We had a huge set of them and promptly tossed them. These new ones do not contain BPA, but it is only a matter of time before people find something wrong with this new plastic. I much prefer the old tried and true kind of plastic. Anyway, I gave these new ones a chance and purchased them. I knew when I ordered that they would be a little smaller volume-wise than the red ones I had just purchased. The red-topped ones in my pictures are the 16 cup size. The clear containers in my images are the "Sugar" (12-cup) and "Brown Sugar" (7.8-cup) containers. I was fine with the volume difference because I didn't need more of the 16 cup size. I had assumed (you know what they say about assuming) that these would be a similar shape as the older model because the shape of the older model was perfect, so I didn't even try to find the length, depth, and height of the clear ones before I bought them. Upon opening the box, I realized that these were much shorter (depth-wise) than their red counterparts. I decided to keep them anyway, because they are pretty nice looking, and they seemed to have a good seal. There are a few drawbacks to the newer model being shorter. First, they need to be a bit wider for the volume to be enough, which makes it harder to pick them up with one hand. They also don't have the little grooves along the sides of the front and back, which makes the older model easier to grasp with one hand. The newer (clear) containers are so wide that I can barely hold onto an empty one with one hand. I am an average-sized woman (5'4") with average-sized hands. The ability to grab them and move them with one hand is one of the reasons I got rid of my old glass containers. The shorter depth also means that I either have to shove them back all the way on the shelf and put something in front of them, stick something behind them, or just leave the space in front of them empty on the shelf, which wastes storage space. These would be a good fit for you if you have shelves that aren't very deep. My shelves are 12 inches deep, the old ones were deep enough that I didn't have to put anything in front of or behind them. Another feature these containers are lacking is the cup/liter markings on the front/back of the container, which was a handy feature of the older model. The lids on these new containers are nice in that they latch onto the container so you know they are on tight. The downside to the latches is that it is another nook that you need to scrub and dry if you are washing by hand, which is important if you want to keep them from getting etched overtime by washing in the dishwasher. The other thing I noticed is that the gasket doesn't appear to be removable, so I am a little worried that it will eventually get moldy underneath it. At least since they are just dry-food, pantry storage containers, they shouldn't need to get washed too frequently.

Have bought again. Weeding out other storage round which takes up as much space as two of these and holds less! To maximise storage they are really excellent. Work well with other boxes items. Easy to lift out. Can be used for liquids. Air tight so helps keep food better. Would like more sizes. 😀 really helped me to maximise storage.
