The can looks like it was dropped at the factory, because the front bar that the step is attached to was bent in toward the can about an inch out of parallel with the can body. I was able to fix this with a block of wood and a crow bar. The step is also missing the grip tape that is pictured in the Amazon listing.
The base of the can has 4 metal plugs in it plugging holes in the cans base. 1 was securely attached, 1 was halfway attached, the other two were just rattling around in the bottom loose. Not a big deal, but again, not a sign that it was assembled with care. I had to use some needle-nose pliers to straighten out the tabs on the metal plugs so they would seat well into the holes they are meant to cover. It seems like whoever assembled it pushed them in carelessly and bent the tabs, but didn't care enough to fix it.
There are some chrome/nickel push on rod caps that hold all the linkages together attaching the step to the lid opening mechanism. These rod caps were all crooked as well. A good wack with a rubber mallet fully seated them and fixed the crooked appearance.
Having said all that, it looks nice, and works fine (after some fixing), but for the price I was expecting a little more quality control. You may have a different experience, as it seems that many reviewers are not seeing the same issues that I have.
This is heavy gauge steel with a beautiful and very durable enamel finish. It looks great, it's built like a tank. The pedal assembly is well engineered and easy to use. The lid is heavy which is really nice because it rests on a rubber gasket and seals off odors really well. The cat can't get in, bugs can't get in.
It seems insane to spend this much for a trash can, but this thing is going to probably last 20 years and give us beauty and functionality 20 or 30 times a day. Considering what people pay for a nice looking kitchen, appliances and tools, this is not too much money.
Plus you are supporting one of the last manufacturers making household goods in the USA. It's a good cause.
The positive is that it is nice and heavy, sturdy, 100% metal. No way the average dog could break into this.
A couple negatives is that it is fairly tall for a kitchen trash and together with the open lid does not fit under my counter. If this is where you store your trash, keep this in mind.
Another negative is that the foot pedal requires quite a bit of force. I use the foot pedal if my hands are both in use, but if I have one free hand I just lift the lid. Not very comfortable to open if you are barefoot either.
Another negative is that because it is so heavy, you can't just casually move it around the kitchen, for example to where you are cooking and throwing away scraps bit after bit.
In conclusion, if you have a small child or dog you want to keep out of the trash, this will be great. For a normal house without a dog, it might be overkill. If you want the best comparison, this reminds me of the heavy medical waste bins in doctor's offices.
A final point: if you have no place to hide a trash can and it must be in sight, I can't think of a better looking one.
