The overall materials used to build the trash can are fine, it just feels like their quality control on these is a little sloppy. Reading existing reviews it is clear that a lot of people love these cans, so I think that I may have gotten a "lemon" so to speak. I bought the white 24 gallon with plastic liner version. The lid was welded on crooked to the extent that it did not close fully, because the metal of the lid would hit the rubber lip on the top of the can. I removed the rubber lip to fix this, but the foam gasket on the lid then only sealed on one side of the can, because the lid was attached so crookedly. This can will be used outside, so it's not a dealbreaker, but for the price, this shouldn't be an issue.
The can looks like it was dropped at the factory, because the front bar that the step is attached to was bent in toward the can about an inch out of parallel with the can body. I was able to fix this with a block of wood and a crow bar. The step is also missing the grip tape that is pictured in the Amazon listing.
The base of the can has 4 metal plugs in it plugging holes in the cans base. 1 was securely attached, 1 was halfway attached, the other two were just rattling around in the bottom loose. Not a big deal, but again, not a sign that it was assembled with care. I had to use some needle-nose pliers to straighten out the tabs on the metal plugs so they would seat well into the holes they are meant to cover. It seems like whoever assembled it pushed them in carelessly and bent the tabs, but didn't care enough to fix it.
There are some chrome/nickel push on rod caps that hold all the linkages together attaching the step to the lid opening mechanism. These rod caps were all crooked as well. A good wack with a rubber mallet fully seated them and fixed the crooked appearance.
Having said all that, it looks nice, and works fine (after some fixing), but for the price I was expecting a little more quality control. You may have a different experience, as it seems that many reviewers are not seeing the same issues that I have.

Great trash can...but the dimensions are inaccurate. I bought the both the 12 and 24 gallon sizes in white to contain smells in my kitchen. I was going to use the larger for trash and the smaller for recycling. We used the same trash container in my work lab years ago and it contained chemical smells so I thought it would be great to contain smells for my kitchen garbage. However the product dimensions for the 24 gallon are WRONG. It is not 15" wide, it is actually 16 1/4 inches with the rivets on the hinge bars. the lid is in fact 15" x 15" but the rivets/hinge bars extend 3/4" on each side thus making it wider than the product dimensions for this item listing (Product Dimensions: 15 x 15 x 30 inches) therefore it will not fit in my pantry closet or next to my refrigerator. I don't know if it can be returned but since I bought the 12 gal as well, i will use that in my pantry and either return the 24 gal or find some place outside to use it. which is a very expensive trash can for outside where smell is not an issue.
