I wish I had read these reviews BEFORE purchasing this product. What a huge disappointment. I've owned the Rubbermaid Steel Sponge Mop for almost 20 years and never had a problem because the original sponge refills were truly a great sponge. I recently needed to replace my sponge mop head so I decided to buy an entire new mop with the head since I loved the mop so much - I thought it would be great to have 2 of them. Well, was I wrong. Just like the others sadly found out, I used my new sponge mop with the brand new refill that came with it and in less than 20 minutes of use I noticed that the center of the yellow sponge was beginning to bulge. As I squeezed the water out of it, the cellulose yellow sponge came right out of the metal grip. I was so shocked. I decided that before I return it, I would call Rubbermaid to see what they had to say. I might as well have just talked to a wall. I told the customer service representative about the problem as well as the fact that this is being experienced by others too. She claimed that they were not aware of any problem and that it was probably just this one incident. How sad! I told her about the other reviews but she basically seemed very unconcerned. Not a good sign for Rubbermaid! Now I have a useless mop. I will return the new one and get a refund, but now I have nowhere to purchase a decent mop head for the mop that I already have. I will not be looking to purchase any Rubbermaid products in the future as their customer service is very unsatisfactory. Don't waste your time or money. And if you accidentally already have, then call Rubbermaid to let them know that this is a REAL problem, not an isolated incident.

I have had this mop for years. Replacements USED to last for well over a year. And I mop nearly daily with 2 dogs. I replaced the mop head in April. It was trashed in less than 3 weeks. The sponge completely tore out of the bracket. But OK, my husband used it while I was away, perhaps he man-handled it a bit too hard. So I purchase another one. This one lasts barely 5 weeks, and I'm using it so I know it's being cared for. And the kicker is that with a broken leg I'm only mopping a couple times a week... so likely it would have come apart sooner than 5 weeks with my normal routine. I am in the market for another mop. As previous reviewers have discovered and reviewed, they sure are not made like they used to be. Bummer, I liked that mop so much too....

These used to be GREAT mop heads! But the last three that I have purchased over a two-year period have all suffered from the same issues. Evidently there have been some changes in the manufacturing processes, and these mop heads now suffer from two problems:

1) (minor) The small rubber nibs in the metal frame that used to keep the wringer hook from slipping out of the mop-head frame have been eliminated. Although this makes the mop-head easier to install, it is also easier for the wringer hook to slip out.

2) (MAJOR) The crimping of the steel frame isn't what it used to be, and the "springiness" of the steel frame also doesn't seem as good as it used to be, which results in the mop head pulling out of the steel frame during the first wringing, even if you have submerged the mop head in water for several minutes to wet it thoroughly prior to wringing. There is a warning on the packaging about getting the mop head thoroughly wet before wringing, but that still won't prevent the cellulose sponge from coming out of the frame before you've even touched the floor with it.

Even though I still buy these mop heads, I have resorted to re-crimping the frame in multiple places along the entire length of the steel frame, using a set of Vise-Grip welding clamps borrowed from our shop, prior to their first use. This is the only effective fix that I have found. After properly re-crimping them, these are still the best sponge-type mop heads you can buy.

We bought three of these a year ago, and all three of them fell apart after one or two uses, with the sponge portion tearing free of the metal channel when squeezing. The sponges appear to be too large for the mop, or the metal channel is far too weak keep the sponges properly grasped. Buyer beware!!!

I bought the mop handle 3 or 4 years ago. It came with one mop head refill. I used it for about two weeks before the sponge became detached from the metal strip. I was annoyed enough to wait 2 years to order another refill. I ordered 2 this time. Used the first shortly after they arrived. Used it again aabout a week later. Sure enough, the sponge detached from the metal strip. Seems like the product should be made better!!!! Not happy with the product.

After a couple of uses the expensive mop refill separated from the holding channel. This happened to all 3 refills we used. Waste of money.

I've used one mop head a few times and it broke. I put the second one on today, mopped the floor once and when I went to mop with clean water it broke. These mop heads do not last, the sponge part separated from the metal piece that attached to the mop. I now have 2 giant sponges and no mop!

Fool me once: Shame on me
Fool me twice: Shame on you

Much like the other half dozen+ negative reviews here on amazon (and not even mentioning comments made on other resellers' sites) the cellulose replacement head for this sponge mop can only be described as a is a piece of crappolla.

After the first sponge became irreparably dislodged the bracket channel after about a dozen uses, we bought a second head. That one was ripped out on the initial use. Save yourself time, money and headaches and do not buy this poorly engineered mop refill.
