More often than not I am a praiser rather than a basher. First and foremost I have to be honest. A little background. I had a high end body shop for 20 years. We had mixing systems. We used a shadowgraph scale that was a $900 scale that you could take a whole gallon of paint that was mixed, and lay a simple tissue over the top and the needle would move. It is very challenging for a scale to do minute accurate measurements when it has to accommodate heavier measures. That being said, I am somewhat disappointed in this scale.

I have 3 scales here to bear out what I am saying. I was really excited about this Rubbermaid scale, have other Rubbermaid products and love them all. So when I opened the box and put it to the test this is what I found. I took a box with a pair of shoes in it, and after allowing the scale to zero out, I placed the box on it. It measured 4.8 pounds. Then I took a tape measure and placed it on the top of the box and it went to 5.6 pounds. When I removed the tape measure it went back to 5.0 pounds, not 4.8. You may be saying so what is the big deal? Mainly this. I do a lot of shipping, mostly USPS Priority mail, and occasionally USPS First Class mail that is good for up to 13 ounces. Once it goes to 14 ounces it becomes Priority mail about 2 dollars more expensive. How USPS works is that if your product weighs up to let's say 3 lbs. it is a 3 pound package, but if it weighs 3.1 pounds it is now a 4 pound package which is a good sized jump in the mailing price. So in shipping inches can add up to yards.

So this Rubbermaid scale will handle packages up to 150 pounds. That's great, but I need to know what they really weigh. This scale measures them in two tenths of a pound increments. So it is either 4.8, or 5.0 not 4.9.Read more ›

The Rubbermaid digital scale FG404088 will weigh up to 400 pounds. We ordered it for our food pantry because we weigh all donated food and record it. Accurate weights, holds up under a lot of use and if taken care of lasts for years. This was purchased to replace one and was knocked off a table onto the floor and broke the digital reader. I recommend this to anyone needing this type of product.

We print and ship with the big three parcel mailing companies. Determining accurate weights is important to make sure we pay the least amount possible. Our old scale was bought used from the inventory of an out-of-business machine shop. It has served us well, but it is missing its remote display. The machine shop produced and shipped one type of part that fit the scale’s platform without obscuring the display. Somewhere along the way in the company’s history, someone disconnected the remote display and it ended up forever lost, at least to us. Not having it has been a huge pain when weighing any package bigger than the platform. It requires a lot of maneuvering to see the read out, doable, but it slows things down. So, having a remote display with this new scale is a big plus. Another big plus is the ability to not be constrained to AC outlets. Having the option to use battery power means we can move it to away from the outlet without using an extension cord. I also like that , with the battery power option, the scale can be set to power down on its own. Admittedly, our testing wasn’t extensive or scientific, we simply weighed packages on each scale and compared. There wasn’t an iota of difference, so I feel confident with the scale’s accuracy and consistency. I love too that it's from Rubbermaid, a company we've trusted and been loyal to for years. Our brand new Rubbermaid scale is posed to make life easier.

Rubbermaid Commercial Products calls the FG401088 a "Digital Food Service Receiving Scale." That's selling it short. It can be used for far more than weighing food.

For example, my wife is a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. In her business, she is continually taking packages to the Post Office or UPS for shipment. I occasionally sell times on eBay. In both cases, knowing the actual weight of the package helps us charge our customers and buyers the actual shipping costs. Before the scale arrived, we had to guess package weights. This resulted in overcharging for shipping costs and having to refund customers money, or undercharging them and having to eat the difference. With the Digital Food Service Receiving Scale, this is no longer an issue.

This model of the scale will measure up to 150 pounds. There is another model that weighs up to 400 pounds, should you have that need. The scale can be operated from an internal 9-volt battery or via an AC wall wart (included.) Strangely, the power wire from the wall wart and the wire from the control unit to the scale both run out of the bottom of the control unit. This makes it difficult to mount the control unit on a table. There are holes, however, that allow mounting the controller to the wall.

If you need to accurately weight items up to 150 pounds, the Rubbermaid Commercial Products FG401088 Digital Food Service Receiving Scale is worthy of your consideration.
