By Hank Drake VINE VOICE on August 25, 2010
With the exception of the "Raindrop" Prelude, recorded in 1946, the recordings on this two disc collection date from 1958-1965. Except for the 1958 Concerto in F minor - which Rubinstein remade with Ormandy in 1968 - these represent Rubinstein's last authorized recordings of these works.

Rubinstein's stereo recordings have been very well served since the Compact Disc format was introduced. RCA began reissuing Rubinstein's Chopin on CD in the mid-1980s, but only the stereo recordings (the pianist surveyed most of Chopin's music during the 78RPM and mono LP eras). Sadly, all but the most seasoned collectors became unfamiliar with Rubinstein's two mono cycles, regarded by many as more interesting, personality-infused performances. 1946 recordings of the Preludes and Sonata, Op. 35 were reissued in poor sound in the early 1990s. Meanwhile, EMI issued Rubinstein's 1930s Chopin cycle. It was not until Rubinstein's complete recordings were issued in 1999 that CD collectors could again hear Rubinstein's "middle-period" Chopin from the 1940s-1950s, a cycle that combined maturity with virtuosity, and gain a real perspective on the evolution of his playing.

Many of the items on this set have been issued on CD a dozen times or more (including at least three boxed sets of Rubinstein's stereo cycle). One wonders how the big record companies can stay in business by endlessly repackaging the same recordings. Who is buying this stuff? These are not new remasters, in case you're wondering. Every Rubinstein CD issued by BMG (or later, Sony) since 1999 has used the same remastering that was used for the big 1999 box.
