The Heroine is a tough, kick-butt character who lives life her own way. As she says, "Me, well, you don't live this long by being a humanitarian". She kills without hesitation when she feels that it's necessary. But even though we're given her history, and even though we're shown her emotions---I just never thoroughly connected with her character. I thought there would be more romance between her and Roark, which would have helped. But even his character depth was never developed as well as it should have been. He mainly came across as a bit of a wimp. The plotlines sometimes didn't flow very smoothly; for instance, the Tributary and Source quest was rather a bust. It really never went anywhere and didn't actually accomplish anything.
But I still enjoyed this boxed set. There was lots of action, and the World Building was good. I liked all the supernatural species. I was just hoping for a little more. 3-1/2 Stars for me.
Likes: lots of interesting ideas.
Dislikes: so many. First, if you are going to recommend a reading order, then put the dang collection in that order. Second, lots of words in a relatively short period doesn't make good writing, or good reading. I simply couldn't finish the whole thing. Terrible POV transitions, random plot moves, nonsensical internal history. Absolutely no emotional growth of the characters. Every character was a cut-out.
I found no difference in quality between the first story and the last. I don't understand the great reviews. It was painful to read - choppy and no flow - I ended up with a headache. I love new ideas and authors who can draw you in. This wasn't it. I wouldn't bother with anything else the author has written, as I would bet there is no change in any of the writing.
