Having read and enjoyed the Prequel to RUBY - Daughters of the Dagger - I was eager to read the first in this new medieval series from Elizabeth Rose. I wasn't disappointed. Ms Rose seamlessly blends historical fact with romance. There's murder and mystery. Humor and angst. There's even a tiny touch of magic to do with the daggers. Though not overly graphic, the love scenes sizzle. Ms Rose writes them in a manor consistent to the characters, the story, and the time period. I loved how both the hero and the heroine grow and change in the story, coming to terms with each other.

The heroine, Ruby is a woman ahead of her time in thought and deed. She knows more about sword play than sewing, just the kind of woman the hero needs for more reasons than one. It was fun watching her bring the hero to heel as well as seeing her transformed by love. The secondary characters were well drawn. I look forward to seeing them again in the following books in the series.

This book would benefit from having a proof reader look it over. I liked the premise of a strong h, proficient with weapons. What I got was a weak woman, who yes survived at least three attempts on her life yet she kept dismissing the guards knowing she had no weapons to defend herself. Then repeatedly felt guilty for dismissing the guards which allowed her to be attacked. Additionally, the guards servants and family members the H kept asking to keep watch over his wife ALL somehow kept getting distracted. Repeatedly. Annoyingly silly. I guess I like strong women and strong hero's, and felt they were lacking here. Two stars for the premise. That's all I could give. Will have to think about trying any more of the series.

The first Daughter of the Dagger meets her match in the Lord of Death. What a wonderfully entertaining experience that was. From the first meeting to the end these two strong willed characters come together with razor sharp tongues, quick wit and an attraction that is sure to start a sizzling fire. Ruby is not your normal lady, she can not sew, run a castle, take care of children , does not wear dresses or control what comes out of her mouth. She can however, wield a sword, fight with a dagger and perform the quintain. Nyle needs a wife and so far he has lost the three he has had and is now running out of time. When they first meet , he thinks her a shrew but finds her frankness intriguing and decides she is the perfect choice. This was a quick entertaining read with an easy mystery to solve. The villain is easy to identify and the reason behind the mystery is easy to foresee. The challenge then becomes when will they strike, how will they strike and why can no one see what is right before their eyes. I do not know if it was the authors intent but I found two different lessons in this story, ones that are as old as time. The first is sometimes what your looking for is right in front of you, take the time to really look as even the smallest detail could be the key to your answer. The second is to be able to look beyond what your eyes see to what is underneath as looks can be deceiving. Another great reading experience by author Elizabeth Rose.

Loved this book. I found it realistic that Ruby thought she was so tough in the beginning but when she had to kill a man in self defense, it shook her confidence. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

I actually did not finish the book. I just could not. I LOVED the prequel and was really looking forward to finding out how it all worked out for all the daughters. Don't get me wrong, I love strong heroines who know their minds and aren't afraid to speak it, but if an author is not careful, the heroine can come off as bratty and childish, complete with foot stomping and hissy fits. That, unfortunately, was the case with this book. I absolutely could not tolerate Ruby. She was rude and did not at all act like a lady born in that particular time period. No matter how she felt about the situation, she could have handled it with a little more grace and tact. She also turned me off when she managed to damage her dowry during an ill-fated escape attempt, not from bandits, or murderers, or rapists, but from her fiancee, whom she agreed to marry. She kept mentioning how she wanted to go home and spend the rest of her life with her father, which is ridiculous. She never seemed to realize how embarrassing to her father and her fiancee, and more importantly to herself that her behavior truly was. I would have expected that sort of behavior from a child, but not a grown woman. She turned me off so much, I could not finish the book, because unfortunately for the hero, she would live to somehow, inexplicably make him fall in love with her. I am sort of hoping I am wrong and she gets killed on the way back to the hero's home, and he finds love with someone else. But since she is the title character, I am confident in my assumption that that did not happen. I probably will not read the remaining books in the series.

Ruby was a tomboy...no other name for her. In fact she so impressed Lord Nyle, though he would never admit it, he decided to marry her since he felt she could take care of herself. His last three wives were murdered, on their wedding day. He felt so guilty about not being able to protect them and he hoped Ruby would be different. The King ordered him to take a wife and watch over his illegitimate son until he decided what was to be done about his son and his wife the Queen. As it turned out, Ruby was almost murdered twice on her wedding night. Lord Nyle's sister can for a visit and arrived on their wedding day. Ruby was happy, she had someone to talk to and help her. Will Ruby ever get to learn womanly arts and will she ever learn to be a mother? Who is trying to kill her and why? To find out the answers just read the book Ruby, written by the imaginative author, Elizabeth Rose.
