About the author

Tom Percival had an unconventional childhood in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire and these formative years are almost certainly what first got him interested in writing and drawing.
The first books that Tom ever loved were the Tim and the Hidden People series by Sheila McCullagh, which featured a magical cat called Tobias. It all seemed VERY real at night, in a draughty caravan, reading by gaslight in a howling gale.
After trying a few cities on for size, he decided that deep down he had always been a country boy and he now he lives on the edge of Rodborough common in Gloucestershire with his partner, their two children and a dog called Luna.
Tom has produced covers for the Skulduggery Pleasant series of books as well as a whole host of others and has written and illustrated quite literally A LOT of picture books!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2025I like this book when talking to children about worries or anxiety. Some books are too abstract for my taste--this one addresses the topic directly but in a child friendly way. Kids can read about Ruby who is dealing with worries while simultaneously thinking about their own. I have bought many books to help kids and some just sit on the shelf unused. This one, however, is one I pull down often.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2025I was inspired by the illustrations, the value of the story in helping kids with worries, the diversity included with the book, Ruby’s natural hairstyle -yep, this book is a keeper!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024My (almost) 4 year old started to get scared but the book got to the point in a sweet way. Very sweet book and helps open dialogue with small children
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I have this book in my preschool classroom. I bought a second copy for my husband therapy office. Discusses that if you talk about your worries they seem smaller and not so big anymore. Good illustrations for kids too.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024My 9 yr old dtr struggles with a lot of anxiety and separation. I bought this based on reviews. This is such a lovely well written story. Focuses on how Ruby’s worry follows her around and gets larger especially if she ignores it. (That’s the part my dtr really related to) and Ruby friends a friend with a worry as well. Once they talk about it it gets smaller. I’m really glad I got this book. We still talk about it especially at school drop off when that’s really difficult for her. Since we read it often and we talk about her anxieties, she’s slowly gotten better at separating. It’s a good read for any child with worries.
