Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Ruby Lake was my first try at a full-length novel. I learned much through the process. I took writing classes prior to starting it, went to conferences, read many, many books on the craft of writing and most importantly: I wrote. I wrote late at night after my children went to bed, on the weekends while the kids were gone at friends houses, or anytime I could find a few quiet moments in which I could put words onto the screen. I wrote in my head at work, and sometimes jotted down ideas on post-it notes while I was out and about. This was my first labor of love, and I'm thrilled so many have enjoyed this and it's follow up: A Wedding in Ruby Lake.
You can find me on Facebook and Twitter, if you so desire. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for all your support.

A wonderful fun read comedic love story.Filled with quirky characters that will keep you chuckling and page turning to see what happens next. There is even a love to hate character masterly portrayed. If you are a fan of Northern Exposure or Lake wobegon you will enjoy this read. Ms. Willis brings to life the small town charm of America and weaves the interactions of its characters in a masterful blend, reminding this reader of the genius, wit & humor of a modern day reincarnation of Mark Twain.Anyone with a sense of humor, guys as well as gals will enjoy the adventures found in Ruby Lake. This reader is looking forward impatiently for more upcoming adventures of the Ruby Lake gang.

Ruby Lake the first book by author Sherrill Willis is truly a delightful read. I loved getting to know Sydney, Illana, Zeke, Alex, the women at the Stay A While Coffee shop and all the others in Ruby Lake, WI (even Attila the Bun). Anyone from the "city" who has found themselves in small town America, even for a short while, can relate to Sydney's observations and at times culture shock. The wit and repartee between the characters had me laughing out loud many, many times. The characters are well written and the story seamlessly flows to keep you turning the page until you are done and left wanting more of them!! Can't wait to read the second in this trilogy!!

Ruby Lake is one of those books you read when you need a pick me up, something to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I think it's even the kind of situation that I fantasized about happening to me when I was younger and single.

Sherrill Willis did a fantastic job of not making the little things too obvious. I was surprised by the match ups in the book, she did not choose to put the most obvious characters together and I liked that. While the book really follows Sydney's relationship, the author leaves me with questions about other relationships in the book, good thing there is a second book, Ineed to find out what's up!

The off-the wall characters in the coffee shop were some of my favorites. All the ladies have a good sense of humor and they would do anything for each other. They gather and share their stories, laughing with each other, crying with each other, offering the support that only friends can really give.

Sydney is a strong and independant woman (who doesn't love a character like that!) who seems to be able to keep things under control until disaster strikes and I can't help but feel bad for her, can't a girl get a break!! Her luck with men has never seemed to be very good and while she is great at her job, she needs more. When she finally finds more and is working her way to being happy, she gets knocked down.

It's really hard to catagorize this book because at times I felt like it was written for college age or older, but then other times, I felt like it was more young adult. Overall it was a great read and I would definitely recommend it to someone who is looking for a "make you feel the warm and fuzzies" kind of book. It has a little friendship, love, and just enough drama to keep you reading more!

Hi there folks,

I thought I would write this review simply because the book "Ruby Lake" deserves one. I consider the book to be a very good read that grabs the attention of the reader so that you will occasionally find yourself not wanting to put it down.

I do want to let the section of the audience out there (like me) that thinks this might be a little to soft and 'girly' for them that it isn't and that I can happily report that this book has plenty to enjoy for everyone out there.

Sherrill Willis has a way of writing that is humorous, serious, and captivating, all the while providing an easy read that you can mentally 'grab a hold of.' Miss Willis provides a story in which the reader will find themselves flowing from one emotional high to another that will occur not only seamlessly, but enjoyably and sometimes surprisingly.

Sherill deserves a hearty congratulations on what is sure to be a successful leap into the world of writing.

I, for one, am going to be anxiously waiting for the next offering from Miss Willis.

Steven R. Smith

P.S. I gave this book a four star rating simply because it is not an original (published while alive) Louis L'Amour western. I can only hope that everyone understands this weakness of mine. :) Enjoy this book.

Author Sherrill Willis has made a stunning debut. Ruby Lake is packed with humor, heart, and an honest appreciation for small-town life. Ms. Willis writes dialogue like a playwright; as I read I could literally hear her characters speaking the lines she wrote for them. And what characters - even the villains have a history of hurts and mistakes behind them that turn them from mere plot devices into real human beings. You will laugh, you will nod in recognition, and you will find places where you just can't read as fast as you want to. I am looking forward eagerly to the next book in this series.
