Editorial Reviews

If you're going to throw a party, invite this CD first. Way back when jugs were added to juke and barrelhouse performances in 1910 or so and American dance music really got down for good, these dazzling new trance rhythms smashed Western culture's sound barrier at the previously unheard-of speed of 78 rpm. From Louisville to Memphis to Birmingham to Cincinnati, these popular party bands mixed fine musicianship with clever songwriting and an unblushing sense of burlesque. Whether it's the raw wailing of young Ashley Thompson with Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers' "Big Railroad Blues" or the jazz-inflected wizardry of Earl McDonald and Clifford Hayes on the Dixieland Jug Blowers' "Banjoreno" or the Memphis Jug Band's raucous ribaldry on "Cocaine Habit Blues" and "Ruckus Juice and Chittlins," this first of two inspired volumes of jug-band classics blows out the lights, stops time in its tracks, and rocks. --Alan Greenberg

Review

Perhaps the most amazing thing about these old jug band recordings is the sophistication of their approach. The dynamics are exquisite, the timing and exchange of riffs precise, and the arrangements effective ... one hears the roots of folk and blues.... Most of these tunes sound solidly black, though some ... seem equally descended from the white parlor. I can't imagine that much contemporary music will, in 60 or 70 years, sound as relevant or as exciting. -- Living Blues

If you're an aficianado of the skiffle band or kitchen band and have a hankering for the blues, this offering is for you. This CD has 23 selections featuring the most popular jug bands of the 1920's and 1930's. The MEMPHIS JUG BAND, CANNON JUG STOMPERS, and WHISTLER'S JUG BAND (featuring the incredible 13 year old Rudolph Thompson blowing the daylights out of the jug) are the standouts here. BEN FERGUSON's doleful ballads of PLEASE DON'T HOLLER, MAMA and TRY AND TREAT HER RIGHT are great as well as Cannon's MINGLEWOOD BLUES, the Memphis Jug Band's SPIDER NEST BLUESand Whistler's LOW DOWN BLUES. There are some sophisticated groups like the DIXIELAND JUG BLOWERS but most of these groups are making music with whatever they could lay their hands on and great music they do make! Jug playing is a diminishing art form but this CD is a master class as to how it's done!
