Well, two and a half weeks later and my pupper chewed about halfway through the leash in about 40 seconds. When I read other reviews that said dogs had chewed through the leash, I always assumed the person left the dog with the leash for an extended period of time, allowing the dog to use the leash like a chew toy. But, tonight, I literally put the leash on in the kitchen, and by the time I had opened the front door to go on a walk, my pup had almost chewed through it. I'm so disappointed because I really liked this leash. Unfortunately, I can't justify spending this much $$ on a leash that's only going to last 18 days.
FYI, I ended up cutting off the end of the leash that was chewed (the carabiner end), and then bought a pack of 2 rope clamps (sized 3/8" - 1/2") from the big orange home improvement store for just over $2. I looped the end of the leash through the carabiner and then attached the rope clamp. It doesn't look as good as the original design, but it doesn't look bad and it will hold. I lost about 8 inches of the leash, but at least I don't have to throw it away now. After some internet searches, I realized that I could buy climbing rope by the foot at a local outdoor store, and with the carabiner and rope clamps, I could make a DIY leash that's just as good of quality as this Ruffwear leash for a fraction of the cost.
****MY ORIGINAL REVIEW****
This thing is awesome. My Aussie puppy chewed (almost all the way) through a webbed fabric leash within a few minutes so I wanted something more rugged. This did the trick! Yes, it's expensive. Is it worth it? To me, heck yeah. She still bites the leash - a LOT, but it never frays the way the nylon fabric leashes did.
I also haven't had any issues with the carabiner coming loose. Even if it did, I don't understand how the latch could come unhooked from the Ruffwear Front Range harness' attachment point... it's definitely not easy to get ON to the harness. I suppose with different collars or harnesses, the attachment loop might be bigger, where the carbiner can hook on easier. Dunno.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with it, and might even buy another just for fun.
I love that the leash is really lightweight, durable in rain and on long walks, and reflective. I wish it were a little longer, but it’s a great purchase. Thank you Ruffwear!
I also purchased the harness by ruffwear and it’s amazing. Great brand!
