This collar works well for our Shiba. This is the fourth collar we've tried for him. We've been looking for a collar which will allow his hair to lay naturally and also won't ride up high on his neck. This collar does both. All three previous collars made the hair around collar stand up so it looked silly. Two of the previous collars would ride up his neck for some reason, but the Ruffwear stays down low where it should be. No issues adjusting this. Also we are quite pleased with the little black rubber "silencer" on the tag clip. It works well. No more jingling tags. We will not hesitate buy another one when this one wears out...

True to Ruffwear, the quality is superb - knots are very tight, and must be adjusted to fit dog AFTER slipping over the dog's head. However, I have a very active border collie which made it hard to adjust when she is wiggling. Hair around neck would get caught in the knots as I was adjusted it also. Based on the way the design works, there is no way to quickly remove the collar - it would have to be readjusted by sliding the knots back - my concern would be in case of emergency, if the collar is caught or twisted, and there is no way to quickly release the collar. Beautifully made, but unfortunately not functional for me - it will be sitting in the closet collecting dust.....wish it has some quick-release mechanism!

We have tried at least four different collars for our Border Collie/Aussie mix, and all have disappointed in one way or another. After looking at some other Ruffwear products, I found the Knot-a-Collar and decided to give it a try. It's a bit more expensive than most other nylon collars, but it is worth it.

First, flat collars made our fuzzy girl's neck hair stand oddly. As others have said, the Knot-a-Collar settles nicely into her fur and doesn't make her look weird. Second, the fact that it has a metal plate for her tags and then a separate one in the back for her leash clip is sheer brilliance. Third, it just looks cool!

It is a bit difficult to put on and adjust at first, especially on a dog with a longer coat. You have to open it up wide, slip it over the head, and then go about adjusting each knot until the collar is the correct size and the knots roughly equidistant from the metal plate (if you care about such things). The knots are pretty tight and can be hard to move, but I see this as a good thing.

If your dog is a strong puller and you plan on clipping his/her leash only to a collar, I would strongly urge you to consider another product. Although the knots are tight, I can definitely see the collar loosening under such pressure. Then again, if your dog is a puller you should really consider a head or Easy-Walk harness (along with some training).

One last thing. Our dog has a weird issue with her getting skittish when her tags jingle on the side of her food bowl. On several occasions she has managed to catch the tags on the lip of the bowl, freak out, and jump back so quickly that she has dumped her food and water. With the Knot-a-Collar, however, the tags are held higher, and the rubber tag bumper means they don't jingle on her bowl. So far, no dumped food or freaked out fuzzy!

Bought this for my Border Collie over three years ago. It still looks new. She was a rescue and within a few days of us getting acquainted I noticed she was constantly scratching at her collar. It didn't take a dog expert to figure out she didn't like her old collar. When this arrived and I took her old one off, she rolled over on her back telling me how relived she was to get out of that crappy collar. She never has scratched at her collar since, instant relief. Near as I can tell, she doesn't even know its there.

Soon after we started dog training, the trainers recommended a prong collar when we walked, being a BC she is extremely high energy. This collar did not interfere with the prong collar at all. It easily goes on in front of her Ruffwear collar.

This was what I was wanting in a collar. I'm not a huge fan of collars - for walks I use a gentle leader and leash so the only reason for the collar is really identification, and I care a ton about that.

I wanted something that wouldn't put much weight against her fur, even bands I set to looser settings seemed to make her itch. That skin and fur wasn't getting a lot of air and wasn't able to shed as freely.

I intentionally keep this on a looser setting but it is really easy to adjust; I will fit it more before a walk. I bought the large for my 40lb. dog and it fits her on loose, it has room to get smaller. She's a shar pei mix so she does have extra skin around her neck.

The reflective threads are great, they haven't started peeling or splitting.

I really like the metal loop at the back, it easily fits a carabiner I use to keep her leash on (it's an older leash which once or twice decides to let go, not a Ruffwear leash).

As a side note I was commenting on my best friends dog leash. Her husband rock climbs and it's made from old climbing rope and a carabiner for her Belgian Malanwa. I told her it reminded me of the new collar I just bought, and she said, "Ruffwear? I have one too". True story, I saw it in the mudroom later, same size and color as mine. Great dog mamas think alike!
