I got the medium size for my 54.2lb German Shepherd Rottweiler mix dog. It fits him but it's a little on the big end so it's slightly loose. The material and construction are of high quality! I have two jackets for my dog now: this Ruffwear K-9 Overcoat and the Kurgo Loft Jacket. When the weather is cool between 40's and 50's Fahrenheit, I use the Kurgo jacket because it's light weight and is wind and rain resistant. When the weather is colder like in the 20's - 30'sF, I use the Ruffwear jacket because it's thicker. It really depends on how cold and windy the weather is and how active my dog is at that time.
The Ruffwear jacket product description doesn't say whether it's water resistant or waterproof. Based on other reviews and my observation of the jacket, the top layer is water resistant but any serious rain will soak the jacket and make the dog cold. Compared to the Kurgo jacket, I think the Kurgo does better against water absorption. When it's really cold or windy, I dress my dog in both the Kurgo and Ruffwear jacket along with boots. I wish this jacket was water proof. I bought some water proof spray I might use on this jacket to increase its functionality.
What I love most about the Ruffwear Overcoat is that it uses buckles instead of Velcro to attach and secure the jacket. This means the jacket attachments will last longer than Velcro. It is also more preferred by dogs who fear noises from Velcro. My dog really feared and hated the Velcro sounds at first and did not like wearing his Kurgo jacket when I first got it. However, he's learned to associate the jacket to going outside so he's not as afraid of it anymore but still doesn't really like the sound of Velcro opening. I notice that it's faster to put on the Kurgo jacket. The stitching and fabric on the Ruffwear jacket is also of higher quality. The Kurgo Loft Jacket ripped after my dog was wrestling with his friend. This happened within a week of getting the Kurgo jacket. The same thing happened to the other dog's Kurgo Loft Jacket. If your dog is a wrestler, I'm sure the Ruffwear jacket will also get worn down and torn over time but at least the coat will last longer. The jacket runs big based on measurements. My dog has other Ruffwear products and we always get the Medium size and they fit perfectly. This jacket was cinched down to almost the smallest setting and it's still loose and long on his back. When he walks, the back of the jacket tends to move to one side of the body. However, I decided to keep it because the small might be too small. The looseness of the Ruffwear jacket also allows me to dress him in his Kurgo jacket underneath for really cold days. This Ruffwear jacket does not have a zipper opening at the top of the coat for leash/lead access. You will have to wear the harness over the coat. I already do this with my dog so it didn't affect my buying decision much, but it still would've been nice to have that option. The Kurgo brand jackets all have them. When I first bought a dog jacket, it did affect my buying decision but over time, I preferred to have the harness on top because it makes it easier to restrain the dog in cases of emergency.
The Ruffwear jacket is offered in 3 colors. I got the trailhead brown color. It matches my dog's fur color and eye color nicely. However, it blends in well with the yellow-brown winter grass and dirt so it makes it harder to spot him when he's off leash. I usually get red colored products to match his other things but I didn't like the shade on this jacket. It doesn't match the red of the other Ruffwear stuff. I prefer the brighter red colors like the one on the Ruffwear Palisades backpack harness. I do wish this jacket was offered in more (bright) colors. It would make the dog easier to spot, increasing visibility and safety.
This is a very nice jacket and I would recommend it. Although it has areas that need improvement such as color availability, sizing fit, and waterproof capability, it's very durable and warm. I bought it because it was durable, warm, and has belt buckle attachments. When I was looking for a second jacket for my dog, I was between the Ruffwear K-9 Overcoat or the Kurgo North Country Dog Coat. They look comparable in quality but I decided to go with the Ruffwear jacket because of the belt buckle. I liked the Kurgo jacket's style better (better fit and has lead/leash access) and it had a built in LED light for increased visibility at night, but the durability factor was more important for me. I like the jacket overall but I did expect the material to be tougher when I received it. I thought the fabric would be similar to the harness fabric but it is softer material. If Ruffwear updates the product with the improvements mentioned, this could easily be a best selling five star dog jacket product.
My pup is about 45 lbs and measures 26" from collar (near-base of neck) to base of tail, 16" neck, and 25" chest. She measures just in between the medium and small sizes, but I'm glad that I ended up purchasing the medium. The back of the coat falls slightly past the base of her tail, but I much prefer that to it being too short. She definitely has her full range of motion, while still having the added protection of a layer of fleece on her belly. (Major plus.) I put her harness on over her coat (see picture) and haven't encountered any issues with that arrangement.
I haven't found any downsides to the product yet and would highly recommend.
My Boston is about 14 1/2-inches long from the base of his neck to the base of his tail, which makes this K-9 Overcoat over an inch too long. My BT isn't even short for his breed. The back of the jacket won’t sit flush with his back even when I tighten the chest straps, allowing a breeze to sneak in through the back. I kept it because I needed something for our camping trip. For hikes, I use their Web Master harness on top which helps keep the sides from parachuting out.
Note, it runs a little bit larger than the Climate Changer fleece coat. The large overcoat is enormous on my 55-pound dog, but she fits nicely in the large Climate Changer.
