Designed to be a whole new look while being extremely light weight. Save on fuel and the need for front suspension spacers. The Bumper is all Aluminum but uses the current steel XHD D-rings. Each bumper comes with a built in top filler plate. Each new aluminum XHD has cutouts and mounting points for the factory fog lights and a great looking Jeep style front slat look that will make this bumper stand out. If you want to run a winch, simply remove the filler plate and attach the optional JK Winch mounting plate (Steel Plate). The XHD Aluminum bumper is approximately 80 pounds plus lighter than the average steel off road bumper. Government studies show a fuel economy benefit of 2 percent for every 100 pounds of weight savings.

Rugged Ridge XHD Rear Bumper Pods
Taking the light weight theme further, we have developed steel inner framed Aluminum Rear Bumper Pods. These new lightweight Pods still allow for over sized tires but take a huge chunk of weight out of the bumper. The XHD Aluminum bumper pods are approximately 40lbs+ lighter than the average steel off road bumper.

1) The bumper is heavy for aluminum and its size. It weighs about 50lbs. I'm not sure how much of it is actually aluminum. The frame mounting bracket is definitely steel. I should have done more due diligence. I was expecting a weight similar to the Genright aluminum bumper at ~20lb.
2) The craftsmanship is barely mediocre and no obvious quality control.
a) I could not get the passenger side mounting holes to line up with the frame and cross-member mounting points. The driver side mounted fine. I had some emails back/worth with a pleasant fellow at RR. Days later, I eventually got it mounted after hours of muscling with screw drivers (trying to pry things in place) and lots of cussing. During the process, I was tempted to send the bumper back to Amazon and go buy the Genright bumper....but I was too lazy to pack it all up and haul it to UPS.
b) the D-ring mount came pre-mounted on the pods. I removed the 4 hefty bolts on the passenger side during my plight to get the bumper mounted (I wanted to measure the squareness of the mounting bracket without the pod attached). The four bolts were a pain to get off. When they finally broke free they took a chuck of the nice textured paint on D-ring mount with them ( yeah, I'm not sure the finish will last long ). Once I removed the bolts, I could see that the holes in the D-ring mount were also not perfectly aligned with the pod mount (probably why they were so hard to get off). This became more obvious when I had to bolt it back back together... getting the 4th bolt started was another cussing event. (really? where's the quality control RR).
c) The instructions are a joke. There are typos and the figures are such poor quality you can't tell what your looking at. I only looked at the instructions to figure out what all the left over parts were for (and there's a lot). The instructions didn't help. Side note: I also have the RR aluminum hood latches. The installation instructions for those are orders of magnitude better (and so is the quality of the product).
Summary: I like the looks of the bumper. I wish it was less expensive, and I wish the quality was higher. The one I received must have been made on a Friday afternoon by a someone who probably hates their job.
I bought this because I don't normally go off-roading in NJ unless you consider the occasional Jersey City project visit and Garden State Parkway winter potholes (they only come up in the Newark area). Now with that being said, I was getting used to the low gas mileage with 35's on. Okay 18mpg is not bad, but the darn thing feels slow. Getting steel front and rear bumpers were not going to make it better, and I still don't have my spare on. Getting back, these suckers are $400+, AND, AND, the middle step is optional! wtf. I was misled that the "black" in the middle of the picture was part of the bumper, no that's your frame's cross-member.
IMHO, pricey and the quality is 7.5/10. Also, no one shows the side view because there is a confusing and ugly gap from the bumper to the rear fender. It is something that made me "feel some type of way," but it was too late since I was out of the return window time frame. I will also say that the pieces inside were all jumbled up and the unit seemed partially installed already. I can't knock them on that because I have seen stuff in the past where a unit comes installed already and there are instructions on how to build it. Again, wtf.
What I will ding them on is the instructions and the excess amount of pieces left. I can't find anything on the web and not one idiot did a youtube how-to on this bad boy. Count me in on that. However, I can see why. I am the first to review this so there must not be a lot of buyers. You can tell from the forums too.
Would I recommend it, hmmm. look at my pictures and read my review. I will say that the pictures look slightly better in person. The look is growing on me so I might stick with it. I did buy the middle step but it came jacked up so good ol' Amazon prime stepped up and is shipping me the replacement before I even get to send the original back. Holla.
