That extra step in this case is the sharp edges around the base housing where it makes contact with the plastic tray of your beloved Jeep. In the comments, I discovered that the housing tends to scratch the dash. I assumed this was due to the plastic molds in the factory which create a perfect 90 degree corners, which results in very sharp edges.
The solution: just file the inside edges to round/bevel the sharpness away. I used a deburring tool but you can use just about anything to grind the very soft plastic. See photos.
First, this is a typical Rugged Ridge product. Well designed, well executed, and inexpensive. If it's inexpensive, it doesn't mean it's junk. It just means that it may not be as durable as something made with different (more expensive materials) or it may not be as refined as other company's products. I'll get to what that means in a second.
The 13551.11 is the dash kit without the phone holder that mounts on the ball. It took a lot of looking for me to sort that out and I want to save you the search. This also fits just fine on a 2016 Wrangler (Unlimited.) Speaking of fit, this fits very closely and you need to pay attention to installation to avoid scratching the edge of the tray as other reviewers have pointed out. To do that you need to do one or the other (or both) of two things.
The edges are not 'sharp' as it might cut you, but they are sharp and hard as in they can scrape up the softer plastic of the tray molded into the dash. To avoid that, you need to avoid the first mistake I made which was thinking this needed to be 'levered' into place. It doesn't. It just snaps into place. You can either round the edges using a reamer, file, or other tool to round the bottom edges as several other reviewers have noted.
You don't really need to do that if you don't want to, but you do need to pay attention. The bracket will just snap into place so if you remove the bolt like described in the instructions and line the hooks up over the first two slots of the air vents and then just push straight down (you might have to give it a light little 'wack' to force it down so the hooks flex enough to get past the edge of the vent), the hooks will pop into place. Then you install the bolt and put the cover on and the installation of the base is complete.
As to the mount itself, maybe I wasn't very observant, but there were several things I hoped worked the way I wanted but wasn't able to determine before I purchased it. Good thing was that everything was exactly the way I hoped:
The ball mount is a 17mm or 1" ball, which is the same as Garmin mounts, the 'standard' ram-line 1" ball, and many others out there, so you can do with this exactly what I did and ditch the Garmin suction cup mount and attach my GPS Map exactly where I could see it easily! It fits a tiny bit looser than the Garmin one, but not enough for it to move. It's just a little less tight.
I'll revise this review if the knob breaks off as a few of the other reviewers have noted. It was installed in August of 2016 so we'll see if there is an issue with plastic ageing under the sun.
Second, the stud mound for a camera isn't obvious and if you look at the picture, you wonder how an action camera or any other stud mount device would attach. It turns out that the mount is three pieces (not including the bolt and tray) and the ball mount and the piece with the brass (yellow) insert and the larger hole are all separate pieces. You install them in different combinations depending on what you want set up. The base of the mount has a little thumb-wheel that you use to loosen and tighten the mounting pieces. I consider this a HUGE plus since it offers the possibility of mounting other things there too!
All in all I'm very satisfied and I'm thinking I'm buying this as a gift for other JK and JKU owners I know!

I replaced the clamp by another one, because the one which came with the mount was not a good fit for my flip case. If you do not have a case or if your case is thin enough the original clamp should be good for you. For me it was very limit and my phone was not maintained safely. Thanks to the standard 17 mm head ball it was a very easy change.
One tip for the installation, at the front of the mount there are two small hooks. they need to be attached to the dashboard grid in order to avoid the mount to move. To engage them, first screw the mount in place as indicated in the notice but without tighten it to much and then push slightly on the tip of the mount (see arrow on the picture). The hooks will engage themselves easily. So far very happy with my purchase and I recommend it.
goes in easy, looks great. holds my cell (galaxy s7 in a small case) easily, and firmly
super happy with that part.
I'd hoped to be able to use the cell mounted this way as a dashcam. it's WAY too shaky for that. it's really quite disappointing. I will revisit tightening it down, or maybe adding some thin foam in between to dampen the rattles, but as is, it's just not going to work for what I wanted.
if you're just looking to have your phone up at eye level, for media streaming, and handfree stuff, then this likely works just fine for you
