I installed this yesterday on my 2006 Jeep Wrangler, so I can't yet speak to the pulling power. But, the build quality is excellent, and I really like the fact that you can install the solenoid box over the motor (off to the side), or directly over the cable drum in the center. The handheld remote cable locks into the solenoid box, which I like (though this isn't explained in the instructions). Excellent price through Amazon. The only mistake I made: I thought I'd do all the wiring connections after I had the winch installed on my vehicle, but there's a bolt for the ground wires on the bottom of the motor that's impossible to access once you have the winch bolted in place. I had to remove the winch, and the mounting plate, to complete the wiring. So, hook up the electric cables to the winch motor and solenoid *before* you bolt the winch in place.
I purchased this winch along with the Rugged Ridge XHD Bumper 11540.10. I got my Jeep stuck in about 4 foot of snow and it allowed for me to talk my wife into purchasing these items for future stuck situations. I'm not really an off-road kind of guy but it snows pretty bad in northern Indiana and I'm also planning on getting stuck in some muddy fields when I'm ready to cut wood for the next winter. So talking her into involved about 30 seconds worth of pleading (and a promise to buy her something nice as well).
But I digress.
I started installing the bumper and winch Saturday morning around 8.30am. I'm not a mechanic by any means so it was important that the instructions be pretty detailed. And other than a minor complaint, the instructions very decent. The complaint is for the four bolts that you use to attach the winch to the bumper. It says to use the four included bolts with washers and nuts but it fails to mention that the nuts are placed into slots on the winch. It took me a few minutes to figure that out and it didn't help that the holes in which the bolts pass through were tapped to make it look like the bolts are screwed directly into the winch.
Anyhoo, after taking the factory bumper off and getting everything ready, the install was a breeze. After it was all said and done, it took me just shy of 3 hours to install the bumper and winch combo and it looks pretty snazzy on my Jeep. The only complaint I have is with the control box that you attach somewhere on the winch. You have the option to either attach it to the bars over the line (as pictured) or over the motor on the left-hand side of the winch (brackets come with the winch for both options, so it's a matter of what you want - which is nice). the control box itself is a pretty flimsy piece of plastic that could easily break if a rock hit it or you put a bag of sugar on it (not that you would - it's just not made to take a bunch of weight, like 10 pounds of sugar).
Other than that, though, I'm very impressed with the winch. I haven't had the chance to pull myself out of a hole, ditch, or rut, but I've unwound and wound the winch about 75 feet to make sure that everything performed the way that it should.
So, if Rugged Ridge were to make the plastic box out of something more durable, I would have given it five stars. Even with the plastic box, I fully intend to purchase my future Jeep upgrades from Rugged Ridge through Amazon.
Oh by the way, if you purchase Rugged Ridge items, make sure to do it through places like Amazon. Buying directly from them would have cost me almost $450 but Amazon's price (as of January 2014) of $256 was much easier on my marriage.
Edit March 2014: This is a follow-up. After having it less than two months, I've had the opportunity to use it a few times. During a really bad snowstorm last month, I was able to use the winch (attached to a 2007 Wrangler) to pull out a King Crew F150 truck that had gotten stuck in about 3 feet of snow and had dug itself in pretty good. All we did was put the truck in neutral and the winch pulled it out just fine.
However, I have to follow up on the control box as well. About two weeks ago, I hit a deer broadside. From the passenger-side fender to the driver-side headlight, the deer somehow managed to hit everything in between and cost a pretty penny (thank God for comp insurance). I hit it going about 50MPH and I have good and bad news. The good news is that the winch came out unscathed and still works after pulling out all the deer hair and residue out of the way (used it to pull a car out of snow yesterday). But the control box was shattered and has to be replaced. Now, the wiring inside was relatively okay after I reattached the power cable to the port - which was why I could still use it. But the box is beyond repair.
Again, Rugged Ridge - please change this to a metal box. I know that hitting a deer at 50MPH is a little extreme but just enclosing it in a $5 metal box would have stopped this and anything lesser than would come its way. Truthfully, I foresee replacing the control box a few times during the life of the winch and at $300 a pop, I won't be happy after it's all said and done.
But it still doesn't change my rating. 4 out of 5 stars but would be 5 out of 5 if the box was more durable.
It may go without saying, but the instructions for the mount brackets and installation leave something to be desired. Using the angle bracket setup, especially, was hard to figure out...mostly because it's engineered in such a way that the screws used for assembly get in the way of the bracket configuration. Very odd.
Also, I have a 2013 Jeep Sahara Unlimited, and the battery cables that come with the winch DO NOT reach back to the car battery. In the 2013, the car battery is way back by the passenger compartment (as opposed to being nearer the front grill), and the cables are not long enough to thread under the front of the car and then up through the engine to the battery.
This winch is perfect for what I need it for. I have used it three times so far with no problems. It seems to be built strong and for half the money of a Warn Winch. I highly recommend this winch for the weekend warrior. The only complaint is the instructions make sure you hook up the bottom black wire up before you mount it to the plate other than that it's Great and would buy again!!!!!
I've used this winch several times over the last 3 years but really only needed it once. And it did what it was supposed to and pulled my Jeep out of a nasty hole.
One note: there's a small rubber plug atop of the selector lever. Every six months or so drop a little penetrating oil in their, otherwise you won't be able to disengage the spool and, like I did once, have to unspool the line using the motor, which took forever.
After much research I finally decided to purchase this winch. Amazon sells it for about 1/2 the MSRP so that was the deciding factor. I have not yet done the full installation on my Jeep so this is the initial review. I may or may not update. Setup was quite simple and the instructions were very well written and precise. I have bench tested the unit and all functions operate as they should.
One thing I felt could have been designed better is the attachment bolts. They have square nuts that fit into slots in the unit and can fall out before you get the bolts to line up. I coated the nuts with a bit of heavy grease (lucas red and tacky)to hold them during installation. Otherwise I am so far very pleased with the purchase.
I bought this winch almost a year ago and mounted it on my 40' flatbed trailer I have used this thing over 200 times by pulling vehicles and oversized sheds and over loaded it with vehicles upto 12,000lbs up onto my trailer witch is 3ft off the ground with 8ft ramps it pulls them with ease I will never buy another brand but rugged ridge this winch was beyond worth buying. FYI it has almost 100ft of cable line.
Installing the winch was not the easiest part of my mods. The wiring terminal locations make for a difficult installation, unless the wiring is attached before bolting the winch onto the bumper. Fit was fine, just really cramped. Winch function is A-OK, and came highly recommended by many satisfied users. Just get the installation right the first time! Your knuckles do not come with a lifetime guarantee.
