Toxic was also an incredible story. Gabe is a passionate and musical soul dealing with a past that was never really the past. It's his present. And it's heartbreaking. His fiancé is paralyzed from the neck down due to an accident he was witness to. He blames himself and goes on loving her unconditionally. This story is about letting go and moving on. It's beautifully written and will pull on your heart strings. I don't even know how many times I cried, because once I started I couldn't stop.
When I first read the description of this book it did not sound very appealing, however I am a huge fan of Rachel's books and with the third book in this series getting ready to come out i thought i would give it a try. And am I ever glad I did. I loved it! I laughed, I cried and just truly enjoyed it.
Weston Michaels is the handsome quarterback who seems to like to keep to himself. That is until school starts and he runs into freshman Kiersten. She is shy and is going through life in kind of a numb state of being. Weston decides to take it upon himself to draw Kiersten out of her shell and help her start living again, all while dealing with huge struggles of his own. He never anticipated her saving him just as much as he saves her. This book is about love, hope, and triumph over the hardships of life.
WOW, what can I say about this book, but it was amazing. In this book we meet Saylor she is a good girl freshmen with a music major and is just trying to work hard and get through school. One day she runs into Gabe a handsome tattooed bad boy. I can not find words to describe just how touching this story is. I laughed and cried quite a bit and just took in all the great emotions of this book. I truly loved it.
Is a novella that tells more of Wes and Kiersten's incredible love story. It also gives a little in sight into Lisa's story which is the third book Shame.
Inspirational, heart warming, emotional, beautiful, amazing...the list goes on and on. I was truly touched by this story and the way it was written. I personally don't mind the religious undertones or lack of "steaminess", sometimes you just need a story that reaches deep inside your heart and makes you feel every emotion under the sun. For me the actual story content is what matters and Ruin delivers tenfold. This was my first experience reading a book by Ms. Van Dyken and I was seriously kicking myself for not picking it up sooner. I must add though that I actually starting reading this series at book 3, Shame. Horrible idea. Even though these books are marketed as standalones I wouldn't suggest reading them out of order. This is a series you need to be fully invested in from the get go. And once you start you won't be able to stop!
*** I HIGHLY recommend this one ***
Toxic - 4 Stars
Liked it, didn't love it. I think maybe that's because Wes left some pretty big shoes to fill, and his story was just so beautiful that it would really take a lot to top it. So while Gabe's story was definitely heart wrenching and a tad darker, due to his overwhelming guilt and self loathing, it didn't grip me the same way Ruin did. Much like the first book, the religious undertones, which I enjoyed, carried over into this second installment and while there was a little more heat between our main characters it was still kept pretty clean. Ms. Van Dyken has a writing style all her own which makes her books incredibly unique, a breath of fresh air really. This series was my first experience with her writing, but definitely not my last.
Back to Ruin....wow just wow! I don't know how many of you have tried to "ugly cry" and be quiet but let me tell you, it is not easy. I was up reading this all night and trying not to wake my son up with my crying! You feel all the emotions and feel like you are on a roller coaster. This series will not disappoint. There is a little bit of everything in it. Love, heartache, humor it's all there.
