I am a big fan of pepper winters normally but this was just ridiculous. He kicks her in the ribs and she makes excuses as to why he did it and forgives him in five seconds. Almost sells her as a sex slave and she forgives within a few hours. This is just not realistic for an MC book. Where is her anger at his treatment of her? I am all for angst and controversy between characters but there has to be realism in emotion of how someone would feel in this situation. I just couldn't relate. I kept thinking "get a backbone". At 56 percent I couldn't take it anymore and stopped reading. I'm probably in the minority but I decided to add my two cents to reviews that gush over this book when it wasn't that good. Definitely skip this.

I was kind of excited when I got this ARC since sometimes I just like a good, dark, convoluted read and Pepper Winters is known to deliver those. Unfortunately I think this book tried too hard to be dark and mysterious and it just did not work for me at all. Beware, some slight spoilers are ahead.

First off, I decided that the h’s actions put her firmly in the TSTL category. Lost memory or not, you get kidnapped by a group of bikers who are planning on selling you into sexual slavery, the first chance you get you run. She chose to stay on the off chance that the H, who was acting like a total jerk, could unlock her memory. At that point, I lost all respect for her.

The H was even worse. He is supposed to be this genius yet he can’t see what’s right in front of him. The love of his life was supposedly killed in a fire and he has spent 8 years plotting revenge, yet when a dead ringer for his lost love shows up complete with burn scars and amnesia, he refuses to believe it’s her. Plus the fact he’s involved in trafficking sex slaves. Just no. I don’t care what his reasons are, that is just wrong.

There was lots of little points to the plot that made no sense to me. How could someone as smart as Wallstreet let a club whore know enough to put him in jail for years? Why did Sarah/Cleo not tell everything she remembered as the little snippets of memory happened? Why hold back knowing who captured her? I spent the entire book that was supposed to read like a chess game of geniuses thinking “for smart people, they sure are stupid”. I also figured out the mystery of why Kill thought Sarah/Cleo would eventually hate him pretty early on making all the angst going on even more eye roll inducing.

Too long, too boring, not a good story at all and I have no desire to get the next book. Did not leave me wanting more , didn't mind at all the unanswered question or where the story would lead next.

This book seemed to have so much potential. The writing was interesting and the female character started out strong. But the second half of the book the female just sort of turned into a wet blanket. The male character plays the victim, when the female character was the one who lost everything. The female makes excuses for his behavior and enables him to continue to act badly, and is constantly distracted by sex. Also the book could have been cut down by 200 pages if it wasn't for the constant repetition. The book was slow and boring at parts. I burned through the second half just wanting to get to the end, not realizing this is a two parter....I could not believe it. This book could have been finished in one and did not need to be dragged out into two books. The second book doesn't come out till 2016. I doubt I'll be buying it.

One of my biggest pet peeves is reading a book in which the entire conflict is based on lack of communication. I can forgive the amnesia based plot, but I cannot get past the constant "I'll tell you later; I need more time," or the convenient failure to disclose facts to each other because it wasn't the right time. It made for a very long and drawn out book... I found myself bored more often than not with this one. The alpha hero was pretty alpha in the beginning but soon turned tortured and apologetic. Vengeance still burned in his heart, but he was plagued by inner demons he refused to talk about--things he needed to talk about to drive the plot further. Aside from that, there were aggravating discrepancies like two different versions of their first kiss, etc.. Try as I might, I could not get into this story. It was just too slow for me and two aggravating, making me want to scream "Just tell him/her what you know!" My humble opinion? Not Ms. Winter's best work...

Normally I'm a big Pepper Winters fan, but this book wasn't as good as her others.

For me the pacing was really really really slow. There was a lot of mystery and suspense, but they became so dragged out that I found myself skimming parts and even skipping whole pages and not missing anything vital.

The chemistry between the main characters was electric and sexy. There were flashbacks quite a bit in the story but I didn't find them confusing the way they were written in.

This book also wasn't all that dark to me. There were parts in the beginning and the plot certainly has a lot of twists that weren't expected, but I didn't find the dark aspect to be much different than most MC books.

There is a massive cliffy that I didn't expect, but I don't know if I'll pick up the second book in the series with how slow this book went even though I want to know what happens.

I will say that I love the way Pepper writes and brings everything to life while making you feel for the characters and invested in finding out what happens to them and their stories.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
