Okay, at first I was like oh hell no. Because, really? Three sexy dudes love you and yet you're really a rancid b*tch. But then I thought, hey, this chick's had a hard time, so let me give her a break. Only, I stopped caring that she'd had a rough time because, well, she was still a b*tch.
So then I just felt like WTF? Because, really, you are still a rancid b*tch.
Here's why I felt like that, because I'm not a rancid b*tch and I do have feels, especially for someone who's been assaulted. There was no character development whatsoever. None. Not even a little. In this novel, all Jay does is eye-screw Kane, toy with JT, snap at Rhye and shoot nasty remarks at Cal (who may love her and be boy number four, like I care). Here's the thing though, if you really want to be alone. Be. Alone. It's really not that hard. Stop interacting and Be. Alone. But that's not really what you want is it Jay? No, you pretend it's what you want.
I can't get down with this protag. Not even for a minute. There isn't a hint of depth to her. This isn't helped by the fact that everything in this novel happens WAY too fast. Jay meets Kane and a week later they're in love. JT demands that she give their relationship another try, so she does. One day Rhye is a A-Hole, the next she's getting high with him. Um, no. Normal people, even damaged ones, don't act like this. And if she's so damaged that she does act like this, I find it hard to believe that regardless of how hawt she is, three relatively level-headed dudes can't live without her. Ugh and *sigh*
So is it spoilery to say what the crux of her damage is? I don't think so since it was pretty damn well obvious to me from the beginning. But just in case...
*Potential Spoiler Alert*
Here I am again talking about rape. Why lord? Why? Let's get something out of the way right off the bat. Surviving rape is more about the psychological and emotional fallout than the physical. Rape is not so much about sex as it is about control and power. The victim is left feeling not only violated and ashamed, but powerless. It seems that if you want to take on that subject matter, you have an obligation to delve into the psyche of the character and get to the heart of those emotions, not use them as a plot point. Aside from Jay's dreams, their is no true exploration of her emotions except what she's willing to divulge. Except she's only willing to divulge things as they pertain to other people. No. Just simply no. It's deeper than that and it manifests in a multitude of emotions, not just b*tch.
And then, just to top it off, the author decides to sprinkle in some suicide like a goddamn sundae topping. Okay, so that's where I check out totally and no loger give one modicum of crap where any of this is going. Really, all this story is is an excuse to write angsty scenes and have three guys falling over themselves to get with one super-b*tchy girl. I wish it were more, but sadly it isn't. The end.
My thoughts are so jumbled after this book! Gut wrenching, angsty and tragic.
HOLY MOLY.... WHYYYYYYYYYYYY! I'm completely devastated.
I can't believe it ended like that :o I'm SPEECHLESS.
**Deep Breath** I'm going to try to collect my thoughts for my review. Honestly I'm blown away. The writing in this book was not great but the plot was terrific. If I had to rate my review on the writing, I would give it 3.5 stars but because the plot and the ending was so intense. I'm giving it 4 stars. It sucks because this could have been a 5 star book with a little work. It has so much potential.
"I learned the hard way how every moment of our lives define everything we are and everything we will be. These moments either bind us deeply with reality or sever us from all the ties that bind us to it. In those precious seconds, we decide which path we will choose. The path of life or the path of death ~~ Jay
This is one of those book that's hard to review because the plot is a web that's untangled as you read but I'll try to give you a short synopsis without giving away details.
James aka Jay (this is the heroines name. It's a weird name for a girl but I went with it) is starting her senior year of high school. This was the year that should have been amazing and fun but Jay is being haunted by a devastating secret that's destroying her life. Over the past two years she has severed her friendships with her best friends and broke up with the love of her life. This secret is so bad that Jay doesn't know if she wants to live anymore. She's just existing day to day and waiting for the right moment when she thinks she's going to end it all.
As Jay is trying to move on she's get herself into the CRAZIEST love triangle I have ever read. She gets involved with not just two guys but three!! Boy number one is Kane which I fell in love with immediately. He's sweet and charming, a bit of a bad boy and works at a bar that Jay frequents. They hit it off right away and their chemistry and connection is hot. Boy number two is Rhye. He's a singer in a band and a boy that she has hooked up with and had a relationship with in the past. He's a nice guy and really seems to care for her. Then we have unbelievably adorable and delicious JT, her first love. ((SWOON)) They grew up together, he was her first kiss and their history runs deep. In kindergarten he told her that when they grew up they were going to get married. ((So freaking sweet, double swoon)) He's always known that Jay was it for him and their break up was more than just devastating for him. It ruined his future and he's never recovered. I was pulling for them so damn bad.
This girl was all over the place. She has serious issue and the secret she carries with her is tearing her apart and obliterating her. It's excruciating to see her pain.
I hate the saying, "The truth can set you free". The truth can't set me free. It can *&$@ my future fifty ways to Sunday. !!
What else can I say?? not to much more without ruining it for you. There are so many twist's and turns. This is an angsty love triangle book with a serious, serious topic. It's not a easy read at all. It's pretty deep and heavy. I'm in need of the second book. The ending was as you can guess a HOLY MINOLY moment. I was floored, completely BLOWN AWAY.
Overall I think I had a bit of a hard time connecting with the characters in the beginning because the writing needed to be more descriptive and more in depth. It was hard to connect completely to the main character even towards the end of the book BUT as I've said the plot and the supporting characters helped me connect more and I really enjoyed and became engrossed in the book. You should absolutely read this if you're thinking about it. My only warning to you would be to have a STACK of tissues waiting because you'll need them :)
A couple of my favorite hot boy quotes:
"I've never burned for a women before and all night, I burned for you." ~~ Kane
" I want your mind, body, and soul. Do you understand what I'm saying, Jay?" ~~ Kane
"Be mine. Be only mine, "He whispers to me. ~~ Kane
"I love you, Jay. I've always loved only you. Please, just love me." ~~ JT
Jay has spent two years running from tragedy. Her running has included leaving behind her long-term boyfriend, her best friends, and sheltering herself from being close to anyone. She drowns herself in alcohol and sex thinking it will help her shield everyone from the pain she carries with her. Enter Zach. She is mesmerized by him the moment he walks into the bar. She charms him with her wit and sass. He is intrigued like he has never been. The two become close in a short amount of time. As they draw closer to one another, things start to change. Her walls are coming down, and her secrets she has been hiding for two years are threatening to come out. The few people who haven’t allowed her to push them away continue to pursue what makes her so sad. Zach can see that she is hiding within herself. The question is, can she hold on to herself or will she allow herself to bring everyone down with her secrets in ways no one could imagine?
This story is full of almost emotions. What I mean by this is that there are many parts of the book where I should feel something strong, but I just can’t because the writing hasn’t given me what I need to feel. I should be able to cry with this story in more than one place, but just can’t. The writing style is too technical for such a deep and painful story. I read this expecting to feel… I was not successful. The story line itself was wonderful, however, the delivery of the story not-so-much. The characters are likable, and I knew who I wanted Jay to end up with and why. This story would have been a 5 heart story had it been written with real emotion.
