About the Author

Although you may not know me yet, I am about to turn the world of youth sports training right side up. On the surface a background in philosophy and physics may seem... well... "Interesting", it inadvertently helped provide a foundation for the development of my unique perspectives in athletic development and rehabilitation. I don't just ask the questions and point out problems most others don't – I also bring solutions. I enjoy my family, kayaking, rock climbing, 4 wheeling off-road, Buddhism, burning the midnight oil, problem solving and pie. My literary heroic thinkers are Isaac Asimov, Steven Covey, Aldous Huxley, William James, Steven Levitt, George Orwell, Ayn Rand, Socrates and Dr. Seuss. Did I mention pie?

Within the first few pages of this book, I understood the basic premise of how to feed an athlete. After clearly and simply explaining how the 3/4 rule works for feeding athletes, Weiler spends the rest of the book explaining the why behind the what.

Weiler described the 3/4 rule in a way that gives a visual picture to help guide sports parents as you feed your young athletes. His explanation is simple, clear, and easy to remember.

“I want to reduce the stress and wasted time associated with trying to keep up with the latest nutrition flavor of the moment,” says Weiler. “Unlike most ‘experts,’ I don’t provide tips, tricks or ‘things to try.’ The ¾ Rule is a model for nutrition that can easily apply to all family members (athletes or couch potatoes) and shows you exactly how to eat as an athlete and for life. One model, one rule – everyone’s nutrition needs met.”

Chris Weiler is a trainer that specializes in athletic development and creator of the Athletes Body Shop; a complete, year round athletic development platform for all sports. In The 3/4 Rule he’s provided a flexible framework for sports nutrition. His Rule can easily be used and applied by everyone without requiring unrealistic eating habits that cannot be maintained. There is no specific meal plan or recipes to follow. However, his website has a growing list of example meals that follow The 3/4 Rule.

One interesting chapter titled "Whole Grains and The Fiber Rule" helps you decode any nutrition label with one simple rule. This allows you to quickly determine whether that food is nutritious or not.

This book would make a great gift for the young athlete in your home this holiday season. I wish I’d read it years ago when my kids started playing sports. But it’s a model that we can still use now as an active family.

Okay – I just have to say, “Try it.” I am a 50-something female who is not an athlete (although I do get moderate exercise). I read Chris Weiler’s The 3/4 Rule a few months ago and loosely applied its approach to my own eating -- not as a test, but more out of curiosity, and not really expecting any particular results. What I was astonished to find was how much more energy I have to sustain me throughout my day (which I especially appreciated during the busy holiday season)!

The approach is simple, but what I also appreciate is that it is not “a diet.” It’s an easy, flexible framework for eating, which has prompted me to simply alter some of my choices. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard of or done before.

The book is a quick, easy, fun read and gives some fascinating insights into labeling, supplements and more.

Although the book targets young athletes, it is really for everyone. My own experience leads me to think others, perhaps of any age and activity level, may benefit significantly too. Because this little book has improved the quality of my life, I must give it an enthusiastic “thumbs-up” and hope others with read it and be energized!

2 teenage family athletes got this book as gifts from me after I read this easy to grasp book. All the ingredients were there to attract and keep a young reader on board: no condescending tone, but instead the youth athlete is empowered to understand, follow, implement and achieve; the size of the book is great for an on-the-go young athlete to pick up and take with; the methods are spelled out; charts and other visual aids are clear and useful; no intimidation- just straight talk with a bit of humor. As an adult, I appreciated the conversational tone.too.

This is succinctly written and easy to understand. Once you've read this, you'll see that Weiler makes good nutrition a no-brainer.
And, most importantly, you do not need to be a young athlete to benefit from this book. I have started to apply Weiler's rules when cooking for our entire family, both young and old.

This book has taught readers about how to feed our bodies while keeping a relate-able tone. I have learned not only a lot about how to eat right, but also about how the body works. Thank you Chris Weiler for helping me become a better athlete! - Kt
