I found the beginning of the book a bit confusing since after reading the synopsis I already knew the heroine would be dressing in men's clothing to join the war so I wondered if I was reading about a secondary character. Eugenia joins the war dressed as a young man to hide away with a tragic secret.
A new captain has taken over her unit and she can't help but to feel drawn to him. A man that insists on rules and order to run his outfit but she seems to go against the grain at every turn only drawing more attention to herself.
The book really picked up speed about 67% for me, otherwise I thought it was predictive. It's a good read and gives you a feeling of what it was like for those men during the Civil War. I would rate this book 3.8 stars. I know hours of research had to go into this book and appreciate the accurate history this author has given us.
Captain Jeffery Bradford is a disciplined man who expects the best of his men. And then he discovers one of his “men” is a young woman who turns his disciplined order into chaos. When he learns Eugenia’s secret, he wonders if she isn’t a Confederate spy.
This is a well-written tale featuring the medicine of the Civil War and the hardships faced by the men fighting for the Union, reflecting much research into the era. Several exciting scenes will have you on the edge of your seat. Eugenia and Jeff are great leads and perfect for each other.
A worthy patriotic tale!
