Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Joe sez: RUM RUNNER is the 9th Jack Daniels novel, and I'm really excited about it. This is the next book in the series after STIRRED, and my first solo Jack book in six years.

I apologize for taking so long.

Q: What happened to LAST CALL?

Joe sez: LAST CALL is also available to order.

Q: You said that two years ago!

Joe sez: Again, apologies. LAST CALL takes place right after RUM RUNNER. I wanted to tell the story in RUM RUNNER first, for a variety of reasons.

Q: What reasons?

Joe sez: It will make sense when you read RUM RUNNER. This book sets up the events of LAST CALL.

Q: So which supporting players are in RUM RUNNER?

Joe sez: A lot of them. Besides Jack and her guy, Phin, there are her ex-partners Harry and Herb, and Tom Manowski.

Q: Who's Tom Mankowski?

Joe sez: Tom is a Chicago Homicide Detective who used to work with Jack. He was in my novels THE LIST and HAUNTED HOUSE. He's also the hero in my upcoming horror novel WEBCAM, which will be released a few days after RUM RUNNER.

In fact, RUM RUNNER and WEBCAM happen during the same timeframe. So Tom is in Jack's book, and Jack is in Tom's book. I hope readers will have as much fun reading that gimmick as I did writing it.

Q: So both stories take place at the exact same time?

Joe sez: Yes. But there aren't any spoilers, and readers don't have to read both stories to enjoy either one.

Naturally, I'd like everyone to read both of them. But you can read RUM RUNNER without having to read WEBCAM, and vice-versa.

However, if you read them both, you'll find that they enhance each other. Sort of like a TV crossover.

Q: Is LAST CALL going to be the last Jack Daniels novel?

Joe sez: It's great to visit Jack again after so long. I'll hopefully get another Jack novel done by the end of the year. I have some fun ideas.

Q: What order should the books be read in?

Joe sez: For the long answer, look for my ebook called "J.A. KONRATH BOOKS IN ORDER". It has various chronologically ordered lists for my various books, or if you're really adventurous, a complete list of my novels and short stories. It's cheap or free, depending on which country you're in. There is also a free PDF download on my website.

Short answer, read Jack Daniels in this order:

#1 - WHISKEY SOUR
#2 - BLOODY MARY
#3 - RUSTY NAIL
#4 - DIRTY MARTINI
#5 - FUZZY NAVEL
#6 - CHERRY BOMB
#7 - SHAKEN
#8 - STIRRED (with Blake Crouch)
#9 - RUM RUNNER
#10 - LAST CALL
PREQUEL #1 - SHOT OF TEQUILA
PREQUEL #2 - SERIAL KILLERS UNCUT (with Blake Crouch)
PREQUEL #3 - LADY 52 (with Jude Hardin)
PREQUEL #4 - JACK DANIELS STORIES

From the Inside Flap

Rum Runner is Book #9 in the Jack Daniels series.

If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.

RUM RUNNER by JA Konrath
Bad Language - 6
Scary - 5
Violent - 7
Funny - 8
Sexy - 7

I often get asked by readers what order the Jack Daniels books should be read in.

I purposely write each book so it can be read without any prior knowledge of any of the others. If you want to start on the last book and work backwards, or start in the middle, you can still enjoy the series without missing anything.

That said, some readers do want a chronological list of events in Jack's life. So here it is.

Besides the ten Jack Daniels novels, Jack and her cohorts have appeared as supporting characters in several other books and stories. Here's the order, from her years as a rookie cop, to the future.

SHOT OF TEQUILA by JA Konrath
SERIAL KILLERS UNCUT by JA Konrath and Blake Crouch
WHISKEY SOUR by JA Konrath
BLOODY MARY by JA Konrath
RUSTY NAIL by JA Konrath
DIRTY MARTINI by JA Konrath
JACK DANIELS STORIES by JA Konrath
LADY 52 by JA Konrath and Jude Hardin
FUZZY NAVEL by JA Konrath
CHERRY BOMB by JA Konrath
SHAKEN by JA Konrath
STIRRED by JA Konrath and Blake Crouch
RUM RUNNER by JA Konrath
LAST CALL by JA Konrath

The Jack Daniels books also crossover with several books by my frequent collaborators Blake Crouch and Ann Voss Peterson, along with my pen name, Jack Kilborn. These include:

THE LIST by JA Konrath
ORIGIN by JA Konrath
WEBCAM by Jack Kilborn
AFRAID by Jack Kilborn
TRAPPED by Jack Kilborn
ENDURANCE by Jack Kilborn
HAUNTED HOUSE by Jack Kilborn
DESERT PLACES by Blake Crouch
LOCKED DOORS by Blake Crouch
PUSHED TOO FAR by Ann Voss Peterson
BURNED TOO HOT by Ann Voss Peterson
DEAD TOO SOON by Ann Voss Peterson
WATCHED TOO LONG by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
FLEE by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
SPREE by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
THREE by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
EXPOSED by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
HIT by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson

FIX by JA Konrath, Ann Voss Peterson, and F. Paul Wilson
RESCUE by JA Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson
TIMECASTER by JA Konrath
TIMECASTER SUPERSYMMETRY by JA Konrath
TIMECASTER STEAMPUNK by JA Konrath

Plus there are a whole lot of short stories I've written with other authors that take place in the Jack Daniels universe. If you're looking for a complete bibliography, just search Amazon for "JA Konrath Reading Order" to get a handy list of everything I've ever written.

Thanks for reading!

Rum Runner is not what I was expecting.
Konrath's storytelling is there, and the characters fit their now long established roles. The plot was a touch rehashed, but a solid set up for Last Call. While he markets the books as stand alone, with Rum Runner, you really needed to know the history of the characters to really understand things. However, I knew that part going in. Without reading some of the other books in this world, two of the cameos would seem like random people waving at you on the street. I could do without the html links that exit the book, and open in a browser. I was expecting a little character blurb, not an external link. It's disruptive.

Now, why is it worth 4 stars? It's Jack and Phin, Herb and Harry. It fits so well into the existing world Konrath has created, which means the action is there, the humor is there, and you lose hours not putting the book down. It's not just Joe squeezing in another book before Last Call. It is another Jack Daniels story, and a nice surprise considering the lengthy wait since Stirred, especially with Last Call finally showing up in a month.

Rum runner brings together Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels and her assorted band of characters ( Phin, Herb and Harry). Jack and Phin are on vacation in a secluded cabin when a "big bad" from her past crafts a revenge plot. J.A. Konrath rewards long time Jack Daniels fans with lots of embedded references to the long history of the certain characters as well as crossing paths with characters from other series as well. The story, however, may be enjoyed as a standalone title. The three star rating, however, is based on the predictable nature of the plot, the lack of true tension (our hero surrounded by an army of nearly nameless, faceless bad guys - do we really think the great Jack Daniels would be taken down by a set of common street gang types?)

Konrath however delivers his unique mix of quick pacing, dark humor, inappropriate sexual references and lots and lots of kills. It is always nice to spend time with Jack Daniels but I am looking forward to a more worthy adversary in the upcoming Last Call novel.

I love JA Konrath as a novelist. To me, he is easily up there with his contemporaries. Stephen King is in a league of his own but Konrath is in like minded company with Dean Koontz, Blake Crouch, Lee Child and Sue Grafton. All his books are expertly crafted and woven together. This is no different for Rum Runner -- a thriller that has Jack at her lowest, not knowing if she loves Phin, questioning herself as a mother and feeling not like herself.

Not that I can't even understand her and where she is coming from as a woman. We have to define ourselves by something but Jack has dealt with psychos, maniacs, sociopaths and the general degenerate people of society as a cop. This one has her going against a character, T-Nail, an old adversary who wants to make her pay. She's only got Phin in one of Harry's safe houses in Wisconsin, a wild fire approaching them and a 100+ hardcore gangsters meant to catch her alive for a psycho she put away 20 years previously.

There is action, drama, and humor (Harry, Herb, and Tom provide that in the Crimebago) doing their best to get there in time to help their friend. She why 5 stars? In between the filler of game apps on our phones we get addicted to, so many criminals you could make a career out of arresting them all and Jack surviving through circumstances most people would die, it felt like a filler novel for the final book coming out soon.

Don't misunderstand me -- it was entertaining as hell and I give credit where credit is due. I laughed out loud, I had some tear jerker moments but the end left me like devouring a box of Krispy Kreme donuts. They were great at the time but left me with a bellyache from nothing but empty calories.

P.S.

J.A. Konrath never fails to disappoint, but rather leaves you wanting more, more, more. Jack Daniels is a first rate character. She holds true to form in every novel and gains strength page by page. All characters are well developed as they move from one story to another interacting and growing, yet remaining true to themselves. You can't go wrong with a Jack Daniels story. Start at the beginning and enjoy a wild literary ride.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't just read this is one setting.....I reread Shaken, Stirred, and then I read Rum Runner. The cast of killers, the plot twists, and a meth addicted parrot add to the excitement to this latest installment of the Jack Daniels series. I can't wait to see which characters come back for the next book!
