My 1st copy of Barks' interpretation of Rumi's work was "The Soul of Rumi." I picked it up from a clearance rack at a bookstore inside the SF International Airport in 2004. It's so rich and beautiful, and I was mesmerized by them ever since. I've read a few more of Barks' work since, and I really enjoyed getting to know him as a poet and as a human being in Moyer's "Fooling with Words." Twenty years later, reading "Bridge to the Soul," it doesn't sound like Barks voice to me... I don't know how to describe it except that it's gotten "clunkier." Almost like in order to get the "precision" in translation, it gave up the litheness and gossamer quality of his earlier works. Does anyone have a similar experience? Nonetheless, I really enjoy his Introduction (very apt observation) and his travel notes. To me they sound more like Barks than the poems do.

I have always appreciated Coleman Barks' translations of the Sufi Master. I appreciate the guidance he provides in the introduction, which is very helpful in better understanding Rumi's writings. His writing is ageless.

Cannot review the content of the product as I did not read it but the quality of the book in terms of hard cover, size , and colour was perfect. This gift was loved! I must read Rumi soon.

Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 6, 2020Verified Purchase
I was a bit disappointed in this translation after reading Nader Khalili's translation of Rumi's poetry. In this book, I can hear the translator's English voice rather than that of Rumi. Also, the typeface does not entirely match the beauty of the poetry.
