In many ways, I am Alice, and I suspect many women over 40 are too. Mitchell is skilled in depicting Alice's insidious slide into invisibility, triggered largely by a teenage love affair with a boy who seems to have a personality disorder and wounds her in a way that haunts her subsequent relationships. Alice's younger self appears throughout the novel to remind her about how she arrived at the uncomfortable situation that plays out at the book's start, and I quite liked this device, which could have been trite in the hands of a less skilled writer.
Run Alice Run has that rare quality of being a quick, engrossing read (take this one to the beach for sure), but it will leave you thinking days later, and the writing craft behind the story is excellent--far superior to most page turners. Big thumbs up for me. Ladies, buy this for yourselves, but share it with your daughters as a cautionary tale of how easy it is to wind up like Alice.
