Kaska's new mystery series features Dr. Kate Caraway, an animal researcher who, along with her husband Jack, rush to leave Africa under difficult anddangerous conditions. They return to the Texas Hill Country home ofclose friends where they hope to rest and recoup. However, Kate'sgoddaughter asks Kate's help in revealing greyhound abuse at a localranch where greyhounds are bred and trained.
As Kate'sinvestigation into greyhound abuse fires up, a young man who works atthe ranch is murdered. Kate ends up in deep peril while trying to dig up motives and get to the bottom of the abuse and murder.
Characters are presented in brief but sharp detail. Relationships - especially the one between Kate and Jack - are clear and endearing but never sappy.
The Texas Hill Country is an area of my home state that I'm very familiarwith and is the perfect place for this story to take place. Kaskadepicts the community of Wimberley and surrounding area accurately tothe last hill and creek.
Parts of the African situation arerevealed slowly over the course of the story - an added story questionof why, exactly, they had to leave Africa with such urgency. I'm betting it's a sort of sub-plot that will be fleshed out as the series iswritten.
My suggestion: Stay tuned folks ..... A page turner, for sure!
