Having read the July 1994 New Yorker prediction that OJ would be exonerated due to racism, I have always been curious as to why that prediction came to pass a year later. Jeffrey Toobin, the author of the article, tells the story in this book. The defense successfully turned the trial into a race based issue instead of a dual murder issue. Instead of a hung jury outcome sought by the the defense, he trial ended up with a not guilty outcome due largely in part to the arrogance of the prosecution.

I felt that this book was a well-balanced account of how the prosecution lost the OJ Simpson case in 1995.

I've read several books about the Simpson trial and this one is the best -- in the grasp of the facts, the flow surrounding potentially complex scientific/legal issues, and how the trial was situated in the social turmoil it stirred up. Toobin's writing is graceful and, unlike many reporters involved in coverage of a trial who spin their initial reporting into books, he knows when to include himself in the story and when it isn't relevant.

If you only read one book about the investigation and trial, this is a good candidate to consider.

After watching the first few episodes of "The People vs. OJ Simpson" and finding out that this book was the source material, I couldn't RESIST buying and reading it as soon as it arrived in my mailbox. I was in 5th grade when the OJ Simpson murder trial happened and was way too young to know ALL of the facts or understand the issues surrounding this case. It was amazing to read about everything that happened behind the scenes, and then watch them re-enacted on the show on FX. I definitely recommend that you read this as an accompanying piece to watching the show if you are a fan of it.

Reached back for this one after learning that both of last year's acclaimed O.J. productions (the movie and the mini-series, neither of which I've seen as of this writing) were largely based on Toobin's exhaustive account. It's remarkable how much I didn't know about O.J. and the circumstances surrounding the murders. Another outstanding journalistic effort from Toobin which is well worth seeking out, regardless of whether you've seen the recent Simpson productions.

A well-written analysis of the facts and the trial. Toobin is a very well respected journalist, who attended the trial and offers many insights into what became a travesty of justice. Compelling reading.

Toobin brings out the drama behind the scenes of the most famous murder case in U.S. history. An exciting narrative overall, and a maddening story on many levels. If you ever wonder why lawyers are referred to as "sharks" and the butt of so many jokes, read about the defense team here. Just astonishing. Like a dream. The Dream Team. Soon to be a major motion picture. Already done. The TV series caught the major plot points and is very well made.

Really great book on which the recent American Crime series was based. The book is less sensational and more factual and is the better for that distinction. It provides a lot of background info on all the major figures in the case and some much needed historical and cultural context to help me understand better why the case was tried the way it was, and why the jurors made the decision they made, and most of all why the country was so polarized by the case and the verdict. I was a newly married twenty something with a baby at the time of the murders and the court case and it was fascinating to go back all these years later, with the benefit of age and maturity and the benefit of this writer's meticulous research, the contextual information I described, and his skill and talent as a writer, and reexamine this event in a way that taught me something new.

This book is a different genre than what I usually read. It took quite awhile to get through it, but was definitely worth the read. I gave a lot of insight in to the happenings in the trial as well as the background of the people involved. The author did a great job of writing in an unbiased tone.

As a companion to the current similarly named TV series, Toobin's book explores the trial in greater detail. He profiles the major characters and enlarges on the celebrity atmosphere and influence of the times. Although one episode of the series is devoted to the what the jury endured, I found the experience of reading about it enhanced my understanding of the verdict.
