Editorial Reviews

Debut album from LA based Run River North produced by Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Built To Spill, The Shins, Father John Misty). Formed in 2011, Run River North is Alex Hwang (lead vocals, guitars), Daniel Chae (vocals, strings), Jennifer Rim (strings), Joe Chun (bass, vocals), John Chong (drums, vocals) and Sally Kang (vocals, keyboards). The band's 2012 6-song demo (recorded under the band's previous name Monsters Calling Home) landed them a TV performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a sold-out Troubadour show all prior to being signed.

Run River North combines powerful lyrics and resonant harmonies to produce a unique sound that is at once fresh yet mature. The songs consistently touch upon a melancholy (particularly in Beast) that never wholly overwhelms; the songs are instead suffused with a hope that is all the more poignant for their restraint. This is not only one of the best album debuts I've ever heard, it's one of the best albums, period.

I have been looking forward to this album since hearing bits and snippets from live youtube clips and the noisetrade album sampler.

It was well worth the wait. Currently, listening through the whole album. I love the rich sound from the blend of instruments and then the textured harmonies. love it love it. sort of along the mellow/upbeat sound of Of Mice and Men ...

I guess one of my favorite things about this group is their back story and how they defy the asian stereotype.

favorite song: Lying Beast.

I checked this group out when they released their first few tracks and instantly became a fan. I waited quite a while for this release and it didn't disappoint. At first, the albums didn't come with the mp3 release but once they included that, I couldn't pass up adding this to my collection of vinyl. I listened to this nonstop for the first week it came in and it was well worth it. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see them perform live. Highly recommended.

They have a monsters and men sound with the vocals, but not as produced on this first on this debut album.

Good lyrics, good rhythms, good mix of acoustics. Being Korean, of course they have violins like on "Beetle."

Really do like the sound, and "Monsters calling home" "Beetle" and "Fight to Keep" are the two standouts.
Hope they gain traction as a band and get a chance to explore their experiences as a band.
Hope to see them out on tour.

This band used to be called Monsters Calling Home, but they changed their name before releasing their excellent debut album. I just love their soaring vocals on every song, and there really are some incredibly original and beautiful songs on this album. My favorite song on the album was probably Beetle, but they're all absolutely beautiful. This is an incredibly debut, and I anxiously await what they'll release in the future. It's one of my favorite albums of the year.

Good quality but all over produced studio recordings. I enjoy this band's live music recordings much more and was hoping the record had some of those pieces. Overall glad I ordered it and my family and I have enjoyed listening to this 2 disc collection time and time again!

I got the CD based on an article in the Wall Street Journal. Wow - what a great sound. Some of the songs are quiet and soothing and some are very snappy and rocking. The main singer has a great, melodic voice and the lyrics are thoughtful and introspective. The sound has been described as indie folk, but I think RRN has a more focused and crisp sound. I am totally patting myself in the back for getting this. Definitely one to watch.

This album is GREAT! It's rare to find true talent these days. All of the biggest artists now throw millions of dollars into music production during the recording phase, then they sound like crap on stage. With these guys, what you hear is what you get– truly talented musicians.
