Harmon Maxwell, Duke of Carlysle, Commander of the Royal Palace Guard, lost his father in the same bomb blast that claimed Merriam’s mother. With his father’s death, the duty of continuing his family’s centuries-long tradition of guarding Sivartania’s royals falls on his young shoulders. Merriam’s carefree, fun-loving childhood friend morphs into the Duke of Curmudgeon, adopts the mantra “Duty before self” and laser-focuses on his new duties to the exclusion of all else.
Merriam learns of her father's plans to marry her off from eavesdropping on a conversation between Harmon and her father. She knows it is her destiny to marry well, to marry the man her father chooses for her, but she is tired of men like her father and Harmon making decisions for her without her input. Naturally, she rebels. Again. She flees the afternoon ball and, in full gown and jewels, boards the first bus she sees and sets off for Singles Week at Camp Firefly.
Harmon follows, going undercover as Merriam’s camp fling to safeguard her from the other men at camp who have not been vetted. But who is going to protect Merriam from him? And just how far undercovers will they go?
Both characters are one-dimensional and immature at the beginning of the novella, but develop and grow in a smooth, logical manner over the course of the story. They struggle against duty and desire like a butterfly battling to emerge from its chrysalis with the same satisfying results.
Merriam stays true to her strong, independent woman persona by not immediately melting into Harmon’s arms when he proposes, but by saying her piece and letting him know in no uncertain terms what she wants and expects from marriage.
Gwen Hayes has literally written the book Romancing the Beat: Story Structure for Romance Novels (How to Write Kissing Books) (Volume 1) on how to write a romance novel and her newest effort proves she can walk the walk, not just talk the talk. His Runaway Campfire Princess is a quick, funny, sexy read worth the time.
I was provided an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Harmon Maxwell, Duke of Carlisle, was the man in charge of the royal family's security. He found Princess Merriam at the Singles Camp and agreed to let her stay for the week if he would be allowed to be her "pretend boyfriend" for the week to keep her away from undesirables. The way he could keep an eye on her and keep her safe. Unfortunately, he had feelings for the Princess but had never acted on them before now. Was it possible for him to make it through the week without losing his heart?
I was given an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had a hard time with the story because while it was sweet and Harmon was a sweet, gentle man when he let his guard down and his feelings seemed genuine, I grew tired of the constant focus on sex. While I understand they had chemistry, I would have enjoyed the story more with more development of their feelings before they jumped each other's bones.
Harmon Maxwell , Duke of Carlisle and Commander of the Royal Palace Guard is charged with keeping the entire royal family safe and the Princess drives him crazy with her immature rebellions. He is willing to give his life for her but due to his honor not his heart.
She escapes from a royal afternoon ball when a fire alarm goes off and runs to a Camp Firefly Falls bus full of adult campers going to the camp for a singles fun retreat. Harmon follows and the play boyfriend and girlfriend until neither can stop acting on how they feel about each other. Honor is still keeping them apart when Harmon hurts her badly and she takes her life in her own hands and refuses an arranged marriage. Camp Firefly Falls is famous for helping the most unlikely couples find happiness together but this time it doesn't look like Princess Merriam His Runaway Campfire Princess will be one of them unless Harmon comes to his senses. You need to read the book to find out because I am not telling.
