Port of Wii U version..with some compromises
Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017
First a disclaimer. This game only runs on the NEW 3DS series. If you have a regular 3DS or 2DS that doesn't have the NEW moniker then it will not play the game. This is not the definitive version of Runbow (even though released after the Wii U version), but good port for those who like to play and/or hone their skill on Runbow on-the-go.The game has a lot of personality with it's character design/animations and snarky trolling game over screen, making you want to rage quit. This game is not for those who only care about winning as their a lot of patience, discipline and practice involved to get high scores, or at least get good at the game as it tests your hand eye coordination as well as pattern recognitionFor the latter, the background color constantly* changes making platforms appear and disappear at will. Memorization of platforms and fast twitch reactions is key to mastering the game as it's a precision platformer*The background swipe away similar colors; when color of background matches the platform it will disappear as it sweeps past it. You have to be on toes and keep an eye out for the color of platform you're standing on and/or going to jump to--> Differences from Wii U version1. Graphics. Not as sleek, it feels more cramped and pixelated due to the 3DS hardware specs and screen size2. Where the Wii U supported up to nine players simultaneously across four modes, this version only supports a maximum of four players in three modes. Run, Arena and King of the Hill are present, but colourMaster where one person use the Wii U’s GamePad to control the platforms and color swipes didn’t make it to the NEW 3DS version3. Variety of control methods not present (pro controller, nun chuck and wiimote, wiimote only, gamepad, etc). Only able to play on the handheld itself4. Online. Pretty much non-existent from all the times i tried to connect. Basically you're just stuck with single player if you have my luck with online.--> Similarities140-plus levels from the original Adventure mode as well as Bowhemoth mode are crammed into the 3DS version. Even more with the Satura's Space Adventure DLCIncludes all guest characters from other indi games, some of which has to be unlocked-->Additional notes.Deluxe edition includes:1. Runbow Pocket DLC Extra VAl-Hue Bundle (New Costumes, music bundle and Satura's Space Adventure (new campaign))A $13 value (even more if you purchase a la carte) if you were to buy the DLC seperately from the digital copy of the game.2. Runbow Pocket Theme bundle: 4 Home menu themes for 3DS.Each sold separately at $2-Both DLC are not included from the get-go as you have to enter the codes given from the paper slips in box to unlock. The codes are miss-labeled so the code for Val-Hue bundle is actually the code for the Theme bundle and vice versa. Something to keep in mind since you have to visit 2 different digital store frontsOverall, if you have the Wii U i'd get the game for that instead. The main draw here is portability, and you probably won't be as fun as the Wii U version due to the small screen, downgraded graphics, and play control (unless you prefer the NEW 3DS controls over the other control options for the Wii U). If you already own the Wii U version and love this game, it's a good supplement/practice when on the go
