I wish I could do more than just "highly recommend" Running with God across America, or use words more vivid than "inspirational" and "motivating" to describe this life-changing text. Running is a jaw-dropping, heart-stopping, awe-inspiring testimony of the beauty of the human person, the power of prayer, and the eternal, surprise-filled faithfulness of our loving God. Reading Jeff Grabosky's Running with God is in itself a prayer, and very simply, a must-read for anyone who has ever asked life's basic questions: "Where do I come from? Where am I going? Why am I here?" This text is for every person struggling to accept the uncertainty of the road ahead of them while seeking to develop an unflinching trust in God's fidelity and love for His creation.

In the pages of Running with God unfolds a relentless experience of physical, emotional, and psychological suffering - not merely endured or reluctantly tolerated, but gracefully and gratefully received as a gift. However, as Jeff's literary voice reminds his audience over and over, this gift is not one selfishly hoarded for himself, but given away - given with his very self back to God and for the good of others. From the very first moments of Running that disclose heartbreak and tragedy in Jeff's life to all the personalized accounts of prayer requests worldwide, the text reveals an intimate, profound understanding of the redemptive and revelatory power of suffering. Thus, on one hand, Jeff's account of unceasing prayer through such suffering is agonizingly beautiful and becomes its own contemplative meditation on the "gift" and "task" of love for which we are all made.

Jeff's story is truly remarkable and engaging. The first chapters get into Jeff's personal life and then he takes you through his journey across America day-by-day. The book is hard to put down! The personal story plus the actual athletic feat is amazing. Everyone will find something they can relate to in this book - I highly recommend checking it out.

This was a fantastic book that was extremely inspiring. To read along with Jeff's journey was a privilege; his strength of character is only surpassed by his faith in the Lord. It's very easy to marvel at the athletic feat, which Jeff describes so well that you can't help but feel the daunting physical nature of the run ever step of the way. It's amazingly commendable that all along this run, Jeff prays for all those around him and all the prayer requests that flood his inbox; it's really humbling when you think you have problems and you read about some of the heartbreaking stories. However, what is truly touching about the book is that time and time again Jeff is able to demonstrate that when things are looking bleak, there is always his faith to carry him along the way. The other major theme that I always got a smile about were the kind people that he had met throughout his run; there is a stark loneliness inherent in the run that clearly comes through the pages, and you can't help but cheer a bit inside whenever Jeff got the opportunity to be surrounded by wonderful people to help him along the way.

The book is a powerful message of overcoming obstacles in life, cherishing the relationships you have, being thankful for the little things, and most importantly a display of the presence of God in an extraordinary man.

As a Christian and a runner, I found this book to be interesting and inspiring on many levels. I found myself shaking my head in disbelief of how he faced and overcame incredible obstacles (physical, emotional, mental) on his journey. I felt like I was on the journey with him.

You don't have to be a Catholic or a runner to appreciate Jeff Grabosky's message in the book. Though I am a Catholic, I am definitely NOT a runner. However, I could hardly put this book down because I recognized so many situations in my own life that paralleled his account of the journey. If you have ever taken on a new adventure, career, direction, etc. in your life and found that once you began, you asked yourself, "What was I thinking?" or "What did I get myself into and will I survive it?" you will find validation in Jeff's words. The emotional ups and downs he relates gives the reader a sense that these experiences are all part of the journey and not a sign that one has made a mistake in taking on the goal. In particular, the feelings of profound loneliness, sadness, and "emotional boundaries that are worn down" (thank you, Jeff, for using that term because I thought I was just lacking coping skills when in fact it was simply part of the "ride"). I don't want to sound like it's all negative. The moments of pure joy at the smallest of gestures on the part of perfect strangers and the feeling of finally reaching the goal inspire the reader to press on through life's challenges. "Rest if you must, but don't quit" (an excerpt from a poem my grandmother you used to refer to while I was growing up). Finally, on the spiritual side and life's bigger picture, we can put our pain, suffering, despair, boredom, loneliness, and lack of direction into better perspective if we place our focus on relieving the pain in others. Miracles happen when we release our self-centered behavior and help carry another's burdens. Jeff is living proof that God's grace can carry us through anything life throws our way and the power of prayer is infinite.
