Rupert Ratio's book is a very complete work on any detail that has to do with the BSA unit single engines. This is obviously a dedicated work that was years in the making while Mr. Ratio gathered his vast experience about these motorcycle engines.
I rated the book four stars however, not because it was not a detailed work on the B series unit engine, but rather I was looking to find an easy to understand way of crankshaft shimming, but found this book was just as cryptic as other manuals. My overhauls on these engines have shown that previous mechanics struggle with this procedure, as well. Most will not be able to avoid the destruction of expensive new main bearings while trying to figure out the shim stack with most giving up and resorting to using no shimming for the crank whatever! I was hoping to see if Mr. Ratio had discovered various methods to the shimming problem making it easier on the service techs in the field. I developed one method over the years that I apply to both A series and B series engines with fast and dependable results without sacrificing a set of new main bearings to accomplish the correct shim spacing. I'm sure there are other methods, as well?
The rest of the manual is well worth the money and the read. Definitely a "must have" for those that ride and service all B series BSA unit singles!

For the B50 this book is much better than the Chilton. It has more illustrations tech tips, and information. Pictures are also clearer. The Chilton manual I have has fussy and dark illustrations. Also the Chilton manual gave vague information on valve clearance information
stating .015" for both intake and exhaust. The Rupert manual give valve timing clearances and cold clearances

A good book and an easy read. Mr. Ratio (a pseudonym, by the way) has a gentle sense of British humor honed by long-suffering attendance to various unit singles. If you have a BSA unit single (or a Triumph derivative) you should have this book. It covers a LOT of ground and BSA models, but the information you need to help sort out your BSA project is in there. I have a B44 (my third!!), and learned a great deal about the details of the various B44s through the years. BSA didn't help anyone by changing just about everything on what seemed like a daily basis - but Mr. Ratio sorts it out well, and provides a good working summary of the major facts you need to know about each model. Team this book with Volume Two, on "everything else" besides engines, and you will do right by your bike - a good workshop manual and a parts book, and you should be able to resurrect and/or maintain any of the BSA/Triumph unit singles.

I bought all of the old BSA unit single manuals I could find (including service sheets) and this is the best. Lupton has a pretty good one too, but this is better.

"The" go to book for the BSA unit singles. Paired with a factory manual you should have everything you need. I am using it to build A 1961 B40 in a 1970 TR25W frame cafe.
