What I didn’t realize prior to reading was this was actually the series called Manhattan, Kansas. However this story after reading the reviews of the other books didn’t have a relation to the previous storylines and is the beginning of the Russell series.
Roxanne Russell is a young military widow when her mother Carole Mia Russell died; many attempts to reach her father, Redford Charles Russell who is away on a business trip have failed. Returning from the funeral Roxanne opens the paper searching for her mother’s obit and seeing the headlines announcing her father Redford Charles Russell death in Manhattan Kansas and a list of his wife and children.
So begins an entire life of lies, secrets and deceit for Roxanne. I as many readers do always put myself into the place of the individual and think what I would do if I found out my entire life was not what I thought it was. A father that I loved wasn’t just my father but had a wife and other children. How would I react?
You can feel the tension in the writing as Roxanne opens the door to her father’s den where she was told never to open the door even when he was in the room. Finding papers of birth certificates, social security cards, her birth certificate among other things.
I give Roxanne credit; as she goes off in search of this family in Manhattan Kansas the day after his funeral and finds that the farm has been in her family for years. Roxanne is actually welcomed by this other family his wife Barbara, children Redford Jr (Ford) and wife Diane, Roderick (Rod) and wife Cathy, Rachel (Shelly) and husband Jeff, and Romona (Mona) and husband Steve, his daughter Rosalinda (Linda) who passed away two years earlier in an accident and her husband Matt Baker . The other cast is Doris the cook, George her son, Abraham and a brother to her Dad that was never mentioned.
With so many in for the funeral Roxanne is staying in her grandmother’s huge, three-story, and hundred-and-fifty-year-old house. It’s been vacant for decades. I love the addition of maybe the Grandmother is there is Roxie to protect her. After several attempts on her life, Roxie called her best friend, Janice Tallchief. Jan is retired on a disability from the Kansas City Police Department and has been Roxie’s roommate, but right now she needs her to be her bodyguard.
Can Jan and Roxie unravel the mystery before the killer succeeds?
The Russell House is a wonderful story; it keeps your attention while wondering who is trying to hurt Roxie
