I once hired a tutor who used Penguin as the basic texts--and I found this frustrating. Maybe you need to try a few times to appreciate these 25 lessons with many examples. Explanation of cases is clear, and there are lots of examples (with an answer key). This is small and easy to carry, I find that I can study while waiting for an appointment--the more familiar you are with this material, the further ahead you are.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Ukrainians who speak both languages are refusing to speak Russian. The is most unfortunate--this is the dominant Slavic language. The Russians were our Allies in WWII, and the world reordered will still have Russian as a prominent language. I have learned that knowing the local language is crucial to enjoyment of travel and international business. German, Russian, and French will go a long way, although at one time all Russians studied English in secondary school when we were "the enemy." Did we have Russian classes? No, they were not only hard to find, but often cancelled on me for "lack of interest."
If you are middle aged, learning a foreign language is one of the best things you can do to keep your mental faculties sharp. That alone would be a good reason to learn Russian--and just think what being able to speak with people from the largest country in the world might be like! Awesome, and a great
chunk of introductory Russian!
It's basically a great grammar summary guide if you're short on time and need to know some basics of the language structure immediately. I used this, and learned maybe 300-600 of the most common words, and started functioning. A bonus, the book also had a list of a lot of common words on the back. Also, this book was cheap. It was well worth the money to me. It's definitely not thorough though or for if you want to start out perfect and proper, its more about pointing out the common patterns in the grammar and giving you a general idea.
