Our son is really interested in Russian history and all things Russian. Partly because daddy is half Russian, and partly because he records these videos and thinks it's hilarious to pretend to be Russian. He's a 13 year old boy; I don't claim to fully understand what he finds funny *sigh*
So, it's very soft and thick for a replica, seems to be very well made. It's a very nice looking Ushanka and we are happy with the purchase and the price. Shipping was fast and uneventful...arrived on time.
So...the pin...okay. Initially, my husband got the largest upholstery needle he could find and lined the pin up and made a hole, but while trying to get the other side lined up right, the pin stick slipped out and it was difficult to find the hole due to the fur, but we finally did. It was still giving us fits. So...in a brilliant stroke of genius...he told me to run grab a small pair of wire snips from the toolbench. Why didn't we think of this first...it made this soooo easy!
We got a small pair of wire cutters/snips, the pair we used resembles a little bit larger pair of cuticle clippers, for reference.
He then cut the ends of the pin sticks to angles which made a sharp point on each end of the sticks...we found the first hole (I have no clue how lol), put that one in, and with the ends cut to a slanted point, the second stick pierced right through the material of the hat almost like butter. That saved the day! The side with the hole already made, the angled point made it fit through the hole we made much easier too. He got that straight and then secured it. It looks really good! Yes, the pin is made of cheap, flimsy material. But, for 22 bucks we did not expect an authentic military surplus hat...so we are happy with it.
I'm sure our son will flip his lid Christmas morning when he opens this gift. He has a big head...so, we ordered a 58/M...his head measured at 57 3/8, so we went to the 58. I will update after he tries it on and we see how it fits. Hopefully, it will do the job and we won't need to move up to the Large.
If you are good with this not being an authentic military surplus item, you won't go wrong buying this hat. It fits me (I told you he has a big head lol) and it was comfy and warm. If you do what we did with the wire snips and the ends of the pin sticks, you won't have any problems getting the pin on the hat. For the price, this hat really is awesome! I know our son will be happy with it...
***UPDATE- January 27, 2018***
So, he LOVED the hat. It fits him perfectly! It stays on well, and keeps his head toasty warm too. The pin has stayed on and is still in great condition despite it being kinda flimsy. I really don't foresee any problems with this hat at all. If something negative does happen, I will update again, but I don't think I'm going to have to. This is a really well done replica Ushanka. If this is the kind of hat you (or someone else) is looking for, you won't be disappointed in this product. Our son was so happy when he opened this gift...and he loves it, and says it's really comfortable to wear too. It's really well made. Our son being happy is the most important thing, well, and functionality. So I stand by my original review. This is a great hat!
In short, it's a really good hat. It looks nice and keeps your head really warm, which is pretty much all you need from an ushanka. There are really only two problems: The hat smells pretty funny (like it came from a warehouse), but I haven't even washed it and the smell seems like it's already coming off and that it'll quickly disappear with time. The pin is also pretty inconvenient and a pain in the ass to put on; it's got ends like those brass paper fasteners so you have to punch a hole into the front flap and then put it in. Honestly, I'm not too surprised they lost the Cold War now since they never came up with the idea to use the simple and effective sharp pin + fastener. It's mostly a problem of making a big enough hole so that you can find it with your pin and put the ends through, which isn't easy since the fur hides the hole. The problems aren't really major at all though and the pin thing is a real non-issue if you don't plan on putting it on.
Overall, it's a very decent hat. I'm pretty sure it's not an actual military ushanka (or even a replica) so if that's what you're looking for, then you should go elsewhere; this is more like something you would get from a gift shop in Moscow. There are actual surplus Soviet ushankas from the 80's on Amazon, so get one of those if that's what you want. But if you want a cool-looking Soviet-style hat and you don't really mind that they never actually used ushankas like this in the military, or if you just want to keep your head warm for the winter (because it really does do a great job with that), then this is a great hat to get at a very fair price.
