This early-70s account of WWII's Eastern Front may not have the scholarship of post-Cold War research but its detail is still impressive. Especially interesting is how clearly the author sees through Soviet persiflage to grasp the truth. He uses the Soviets' own evasions about their numerical advantages to decode Russian double-speak. Take a look.

Very well written book that goes into great details about the strategies of the war on the Eastern Front. The author does a very good job of detailing what both sides were doing and the reasoning behind their strategies. Found it an excellent read for anyone interested in that part of World War II history.

This is military history at its finest, a brilliant narrative of the German war in the East. Yes, it is told mainly from the German point of view but nothing that has come out from the new school of pro-Communist studies has invalidated what is written here. It is entertaining, enlightening, and a forthright study of the clash between the two greatest tyrannies of of the 20th century.

I found albert Seaton's book, The Russo-German War 1941-45 to be well researched and well written. Anyone interested in the largely unknown war between Germany and Russia, the strategies, the victories and the defeats should read this book. I found that I could not put it down.

One of the best operational analysis of the Eastern Front I have ever read in a single volume!
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017
Although this book is a little bit dated, it remains one of the best operational analysis of the Eastern Front I have ever read in a single volume - and I have read tons of books on the subject. Surely the fact that the writer is a professional soldier helps a lot since he knows perfectly well how modern armies work, operate, attack and defend, and how important are matters like command and control, morale, air support, communications etc. Albert Seaton doesn't omit the political side of the Soviet-German struggle, but this is mainly a military history of epic proportions. I would say that the coverage is 70% from the German side and 30% from the Soviet one but this is natural because the book was written in a period when the Cold War was in full swing and Soviet Union hadn't fully opened up its archives. For the material he had at his disposal, Seaton did an excellent job and his study remains monumental. The book has many b&w maps of very simple construction but extremely informative and the subnotes are also very interesting. Highly recommended for military history fans and wargamers alike.

This is an outstanding discussion and analysis of the eastern front, WW2. Col. Seaton will dive into complexities at times, but I found his approach refreshing: one balanced against being overly general, as against getting lost in details. It was on the whole about right, I thought.
One reviewer criticized the book by saying it is too "dry". I suppose it is, but as a work of analysis, just as Thucydides's History of the Peloponnesian War, it might be considered justly and reasonably so. Another thought it too biased against the Soviet Union, and granted though it is hard to have sympathy for another totalitarian state, the reviewer may have a point here; I'm not sure. (...) Yet from my reading, this is a coolly thought out monograph concerning what was possibly the greatest and most terrible war the world has seen. Col. Seaton probes for the causes of the conflict's commencement, and when and why the war was ultimately lost for the Germans.
It was written largely from the German side, true. Nonetheless, I consider this easily among the finest documents on the War, but perhaps it does need slight updating. And though the author generally does assume a detailed, academic perspective of the conflict, it is largely readable for the prepared layman. At times I needed to skip over a couple of sentences, and the like, but although I would say Col. Seaton comes close to the edge of giving the reader too much detail, he does not pass it. My only critique is that the maps are very poor. A modern updating could provide footnotes, along with improved chart work. But I do think that it is beyond question Col. Seaton's study is one of the definitive examinations of this great conflict.
