I had to work on virtally every wall in a 1,500 sq. ft. condo that we removed wallpaper and wall mirrors from. I could not find Gardz locally, so I tried first with Kilz primer. After experiencing some failure (drywall mud releasing due to moisture under the paper), I ordered Gardz. Gardz worked perfectly. Not only does it prep the wall for a flawless skim coat of joint compound, it also seals in the old wallpaper glue as well. I highly reccommend this product. I wish home Depot and Lowe's would sell it locally, but their employees have not even heard of Gardz. Same for Sherwin-Williams and Porter Paints. Tthankfully, the shipping from Amazon is VERY reasonable, and the cost to ship 2 gal. cans is only pennies more than the cost for 1 gallon.

The product is almost like milk, very liquid and will cover a lot of sq. ft. per gallon. Dries clear in about 1/2 hr., you can prime or paint in about 3 hours. Another great use of Gardz is to spot prime wall repairs before paint touch-up. It works much better than any primer I have ever tried, allows almost undetectable spot repairs.

Another tip: If you have to skim coat your damaged walls with mud, order a "drywall squeegee" from Amazon. It is MUCH easier to get a perfectly smooth surface than with a regular drywall trowel or knife, and you will greatly reduce the amount of sanding needed.

Not sure how i came across this product initially. I was pressed into hanging, mudding and taping a small room in my house for being unable to find someone willing to do such a small job (11x11 room). Hanging rock is pretty simple, time and patience will get you to a good place, taping mudding and finishing requires a feel that is developed with experience usually taking more than a couple of days in a small room. Even the lightest touch w/ sanding the finest paper left small marks and so finally i went to a level 5 finish so my lack of technique in the 4th level and sanding could be concealed as much as possible. So there is the background to this review. Gardz... if you have unfinished drywall USE THIS STUFF. You can thin mud a bit more than is recommended (makes putting on a good finish much easier) and this stuff will BOND all off that thin light mud onto the wall. Edges and seams will not crumble. Pulled edges or torn paper will be bonded back. Openings for utility boxes will be set as if in plaster and will not crumble if you use a dab of it on the edges. The entire wall will be as if its plaster once this is applied and dried. I wish i had put a level 5 on the job i paid someone else to do and used this stuff; my little job is FAR better than what i paid pros to do (i didn't pay for level 5 so this has to be a rather significant difference - no intent to jab a the professional out there). So once i applied it, what i got was a very solid wall/surface, semi-glossy, and showing the imperfections, fuzz, a few sanding marks but overall very solid and firm surface. All of the level 5 was hard as plaster. The directions say this is the time to lightly sand and touch up on your finish. I did a bit of both and applied another coat per directions.Read more ›

We recently decided to put new floors into our bathrooms and tear out the peeling 28 year old wall paper. When the wallpaper came up we discovered that the surface had not been properly prepared. The top layer of drywall peeled up and left us with the peeling paper layers. We decided to give this a try before replacing the drywall, a very costly job. We sanded down the rough spots and put on this product. Several days later when we were sure there wasn't going to be peeling, we had a skim-coat put on to fill in the bumps and finished up with Zinsser's fast-prime. A new coat of paint and the wall almost looks brand new. There hasn't been a sign of peeling in a month and don't expect there to be in the future. This is a great product that saved us hundred of dollars.

I had 20 year old wallpaper, lining paper and paste to remove and then paint the walls - easy, right?!? I removed it with a steamer, paste remover, hot water and softener...you name it. It was the worst wallpaper removal of my life and left me with a wall that was pitted, torn, and riddled with solid paste I couldn't remove even with thorough sanding. I couldn't sand any more because it was tearing the drywall paper too deep and couldn't wet anymore because it was ruining the drywall... Catch 22! I read about this product and had nothing to lose by trying. I patched the large tears then sanded the wall one last time, cut away any peeling or curling drywall paper, wiped with a lightly damp rag and clean water to remove dust - then i let it dry completely. I then said a quick prayer and got to work.

It is a cloudy white/blue, very liquid product. I used a medium nap roller that I was happy to toss after using it (incase cleaning didn't work!). At first I made a drippy, sloppy mess which was easily wiped up. The consistency is very different to paint. I quickly caught on that if the roller is full, light pressure is all I needed combined with slow rolling motion to avoid a ridiculous amount of splatter. After I "got" it, the job went very quickly! I waited for it to dry and touched up any areas that didn't match the shiny-ish finish it has when dry. I didn't have much to touch up because it as pretty easy to see missed spots when I was applying. I chose not to do a second coat as the wall was now solid. I then applied a texture onto the wall (thinned mud applied with a roller). It adhered very well to the gardz. Once dry, I applied a second coat of gardz to the texture.
