I actually used this product to fill a heat break gap in the brick on a wood-fired oven - works great! The gap varied in width in several places. This material is able to expand to fit a wider gap - or to be packed tightly in a narrow gap. It was the perfect solution for my needs!

I have now fired the oven a number of times (very, very hot) and this material is holding up very well.

Great, I also bought the 1/4 to 5/16 by 84-inch (these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YGKGSO/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_8) and frankly, the size visually was the same. I'm not sure how that can be. But it served its purpose.
