I am sad. Rydak was a favorite character, and I liked Lissi too. I expected his story to be really strong, with a great plot. What I got was a weak story that starred a VIRGIN Lissi, a shallow backstory, and nothing that indicated what was behind such a feared and enigmatic Rydak. What happened here? These books have been terrific as they revealed interesting heros and charming, lovable women.
Lissi has been portrayed as somewhat sheltered, and very sweet. But to give her that tired old virgin trope...seriously?
And Rydak...ok, I get the secretiveness of his empathy in some ways. But nothing in this story explained how he ends up being the most feared of all the warriors.
This was disappointing.
Although Ms. Howard could still use a good editor, the strength of her writing outweighs the grammatical errors in the book. And she still needs to look up the difference between the words “past” and “passed”. I’ve pointed this out before in my reviews of some of her other books in this series, so perhaps she isn’t reading every review of her books anymore.
This particular book tells the love story between Lissi Alonson, the sister of the Jutak warrior Unit Leader, Torkel Alonson, and Rydak Jaard, the arrestingly handsome Jutak warrior in one of teams supervised by Torkel. It also has a suspenseful climax where Lissi’s life is in danger.
Lissi has had a serious crush on Rydak for years, but he has always more or less ignored her. In an attempt to get closer to him, she suggests that they just be friends. Rydak has admired Lissi from afar as well, but he has a problem that she knows nothing about. He is an empath and if someone touches him, he can read the emotions and sometimes the thoughts of that person. But the absolute worst part is that it causes him intense pain that he tries to deal with once he’s alone. As a result, he was reluctant to establish a relationship with anyone, especially Lissi . But he thought he could handle being just friends with her.
How these two potential lovers manage to work things out and the suspenseful climax make this a book certain to appeal to all romance readers, not just sci-fi romance readers. Well done, Ms. Howard!
I finally recalled the story around 48% of the way through. And when I did I was soo happy to be back in the world of the Jutak warriors and their really interesting abilities or gifts. I truly think it is a great series. This story was quite different in that it was sweet. Normally I require a lot of action, humour and romance to fully enjoy a story. While this was less action packed, it still had enough to pick u the pace of the story and give it some excitement. It had enough of the other two to round out the story.
Overall, an enjoyable read. I can't wait for the next one.
One he got his head on straight, very hot!
There were some editing mistakes that distract from the story at times. Simple spell checking and better proof reading are sorely needed for this series.
Overall, an enjoyable way to catch up with some of my favorite characters.

As a member of one of the three teams under the control of Torquel Alonson, Rydak was known to the Alonson family. Lissi was looked on as a little sister to them all. Working as an Inspector for the tourism department of the government. After a dangerous man, captured by the Jutak warrior teams, escapes from custody, holds staff and visitors to a new luxury spa hostage, aiming to destroy the Jutaks. Lives are at risk, but all ends well. Fighting their feelings for each other, Lissi and Rydak come to an understanding, enabling Lissi to claim Rydak as her Chosen. A gripping story, that I had to finish in one go. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
1.You would have had to have read the previous books to get a full grasp of the story.
2.They took too long to get together and was slightly boring when they did finally see the light. After years of denying his feelings I would have thought he would have skipped the dating phase.
3.I couldn't understand why he didn't used his powers to get information out of the enemy before they killed him. (as to where he had hidden the herione)
