Rynosseros and the other (VERY hard to come by) stories in the Tom Tyson cycle were a great discovery for me. Terry Dowling claims to be influenced by Cordwainer Smith, which is easy to see, and Jack Vance, which is there, but less easy to discern. But Dowling stands on his own as one of the most capable science fiction writers when it comes to the very difficult job of portraying aliens and alien cultures. He also tackles very well the issue of human beings attempting to hold on to or redefine their humanity in a distant future, as did Cordwainer Smith. I found Rynosseros easily enough, and have collected a half-dozen other stories in the cycle online. However, finding the other volumes in the series (Blue Tyson, Twilight Beach) at any price I am willing to consider has proven impossible.
