This is a great tool for drilling and screwing. It worked like a champ when screwing together 2 x 8's for a deck project. It has plenty of torque and the battery lasts a long time even with strenuous work. It's a snap to change from a deck screw bit to a drill bit, making it easy to pre-drill before screwing. The li-ion battery charger works very fast so you always have a freshly charged battery to switch to during long jobs. The body of the tool fits your hand very well so that your hand doesn't get fatigued. We have a lot of 3 1/2" deck screws in our structure. The body also has a shorter form so you can get into tight spaces easier. I totally recommend this tool. Nice job Ryobi!

Great drill/driver tool. Good Lithium-Ion battery useable with many 18V Ryobi tools. Drill/Driver bit change is quick and easy. I noticed the torque setting has to be set fairly high for the clutch to properly grab the drill but that's simple to change.

Last time I checked, you can get the set or stand alone batteries cheaper at Home Depot.

I have about a dozen Ryobi cordless tools of different sorts. While they are home-duty tools, the tools have generally performed well. I have been on the Ryobi platform for about 10 years. The old batteries were a little heavy but they worked well for years. Ryobi recently (in the last couple of years) introduced the Lithium-Ion batteries (a couple different flavors). At first, it looked like an upgrade and all of them worked initially out of the box. HOWEVER, BEWARE--the Lithium-Ion batteries from Ryobi have a serious defect. They just stop working after about 1-2 years. I have 10 of them from various tools i have purchased, all less than 2 years old. One by one, nine of them have stopped working so far. Down to one working battery for all of my tools. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND GOOGLE THE "RYOBI LITHIUM ION BATTERY PROBLEM". There is a lot of PR from Ryobi and retailers so you have get past the first page, but then it will become clear this is a wide spread problem and some fixes (all of which require you to disassemble the battery). There a numerous blogs where people have tried to make warranty claims or sought help from Ryobi with no success. Ryobi has told some that they are "disposable" items and simply denied there is a problem with others. To be fair, I didn't save any of the receipts because they initially worked and have not yet contacted Ryobi, but it sounds fruitless.

I am willing to forgive having a product glitch, however, this one is pervasive and the manufacturer seems to be unwilling to address it. For that, they deserve one star. Based on my experience of 90 percent failure rate (plus the multiple blogs indicating this is a systemic issue), i can't believe that others will have better luck.

Not all that great, but I'm spoiled by the Makita black and white models. This has no work light, that is missed right away installing cabinets and is a bit lacking when it comes to driving three inch screws into old lumber. I'll use it as a drill rather than a driver.

I love this Ryobi. It is amazing how the technology on these keep getting better.
Keyless chuck is awesome. So quick and easy to change out a drill bit for a driver.
Having another battery charged is handy on the big jobs.

He needed to replace his existing power drill. After much looking and comparing and the suggestion by our son-in-law, this is the drive that was chosen. It has 2 batteries so that there is always one fully charged. It is lighter than the previous drill and he simply really likes the way it works with a battery that lasts way longer than the previous.

We operate a construction company and after years of oversized 18v drills, countless pieces damaged by the torque, comes this light weight, powerful, little unit from Ryobi. Charges within 15 minutes and operates continuously for whatever task may be at hand, great for those who forget to charge. Maintains months of charge without use, and has never let us down. After 2 years still using stock included lithium ion battery. Excellent drill.

Bought it from Homedepot cadana for $99 on sale, used it for drilling half inch diameter hole on a flank of wood and it died. I changed the battery and still can't penetrate. I found that the torque is only 340 in/lbs.

Returned this one and got Milaukee drill M18 2606, same price as the Ryobi P817 but has 200 more rpm (1600 vs 1800) and has 160 more torque, (500 in/lbs of torque).
