2XL Size: Okay, this is perfect and I've updated the review to 5 stars. The material matches my tuxedo perfectly, even the satin lapel and faux pocket trim, which is rare to be able to match the color and sheen of the satin. This fits exactly as it should, including looking great up around the neck (the elastic strap is not visible), and the elastic waist strap goes right around my belt line as it's supposed to (rather than like a bra like the smaller sized one). The whole vest is completely covered by my buttoned jacket (except right below the button), so it's very subtle being a low vest. Very much like a cummerbund, but so much better and more stylish, and it also stays in place (unlike a cummerbund).
After reading the other reviews I decided to originally order the 2XL size as I was concerned about the length being too short. Upon receiving the 2XL size, it was indeed plenty comfortable in length but it was also ridiculously large in all other dimensions. At the tightest setting, 2XL was too large for my 34" waist so it sat too loosely around me. The 2XL was also way too loose in the chest area - it was easily 6-8" too broad for my 40" chest at the tightest setting and flopped comically around the chest area. In short, the fit was way off.
I returned it for the Small-XL size and that just about fits perfectly. It is perfect on the chest and waist, with some room to still adjust it a little further if necessary. I was most worried about length, given the other reviews, but I must say that it is just about perfect too. There is not a huge overlap with my trousers but there is definitely about a 1.5 to 2 inch overlap, which is enough to prevent my shirt from showing and also cover the waistband of my trousers. My tuxedo trousers have a traditional high cut waistband so they sit about 1.5 inches below my belly button.
If you are a similar height/build to me and have similarly high-cut trousers, I think the Small-XL size will do you just fine. If you are taller than about 6'1", then rather than suggesting you buy the 2XL one, I would rather suggest that this vest probably isn't for you unless you are a large gentleman. While ordering the next size up may address the length issue, if you are anything similar to me in build then the next size up will just look too loose and silly on you.
Aside from the size, the quality is pretty much what one would expect for $40. It is decent enough, but the stitching is a little sub-par in places. But for $40, I'm not complaining. It's very hard to buy a vest in this style anymore - I've seen one for $175 in Brooks Brothers but for the amount of times I'm likely to wear it, I'm happy to trade off on the lower quality stitching that this vest has for the much lower price tag.
I took a gamble on it matching the fabric of my existing tuxedo, but thankfully it worked it out and looks like it was originally part of the outfit.
That may or not be your situation, so that's not why you should buy it.
You should buy it because it fits perfectly once the straps are adjusted to your size properly.
The elastic straps are fully adjustable behind the neck and along the waist, plus allow for a little "give" once it's on and you start moving around in it.
The quality of workmanship was great. I didn't see any loose threads poking out along any of the seams, and all the stitching was nice and precise.
A very quality product and a great price.
