Indeed, the steps he prescribes, like Joseph of old putting aside 20% (of gross income, and for 7 years!) in a liquid emergency fund may seem radical, but in light of what will no doubt come at some point, it could just be presciently practical. Or how about having a month's supply of food on hand and a month's expenses in cash hidden in your home in a safe place.
And this is not just about your family's survival. Though it is that of course, it is also about being a light and a generous resource to others around you. The signs are all about us, like an unstable economy, astonishing levels of debt, a political body in total gridlock, other countries about to default, and even the rule of 'mobs' on the rise in America (remember Wisconsin?) and in other places.
So take heed my brothers and sisters in the Lord, and prepare ye your way! Oh, and one thing Chuck didn't mention; how about purchasing an extra stock of paperback Bibles to put on the shelf when neighbors and those around you want to know the truth that set us free. After all, that's what the 'T' in S.A.L.T. stands for.
And I'll end by quoting Paul and his injunction in I Corinthians 16:13-14: 'Be on the alert at all times. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men. Be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.'
Blessings to all,
Stone Mountain Jim
First the good ...
The advice in the book was Biblically based and Mr Bentley uses scripture to back almost every point in the book. This always makes for a good, truth-filled book. I like some of the discussion on investing in foreign currency and banks. The savings plan is very aggressive - almost unrealistic - but definitely achievable and great advice. The allocation advice was spot on in my opinion. The discussion on bank diversification is great practical advice that I'll implement myself.
Then the bad ...
For $10 is was far to short and very basic. It was more a history lesson than practical prep planning. Most of the planning advice was common sense. I was looking for real applicable advice and action items to complete. 15% of the book was Q&A and I didn't like many of the answers - particularly when discussing guns, gold and the survivalist mentality. Mr Bentley comes close to making fun of those who practice survival techniques. Contrary to Mr Bentley, practicing survivalism is not un-Biblical and is just another level of preparation. He also refers to guns and gold in a very shallow manner. Yes guns are for hunting but guns are also used for protection and to guard against tyranny and gold is a very real and respectable form of currency in an economic collapse.
All in all a decent book on preparing for an economic collapse with some nuggets of practical wisdom but nothing earth shattering or ground breaking.
